Exploring Dijon as a local, not a tourist [EN/FR]

Hello Hive! It had been almost a week since I had not published. With @altheana, we took a few days off to do a tour in my family, which is scattered a bit everywhere in France.

Our first step was a journey of more than 400 kilometers from Normandy to reach the city of gastronomy and wine: Dijon.

My grandmother lives Dijon, so I go there since very little. But since I entered working life, the occasions to go there are rare.

Last week, taking advantage of the public holiday and knowing that our clients would surely do the same, we jumped on the occasion, knowing that my grandmother would be delighted to see us.

It is really a place where it is good to live. The city is dynamic and had the luck to be spared by bombings during the various wars. Thus, the buildings kept their charm of the time.

We had not established a precise schedule. We preferred to follow my grandmother in her routine, because nothing beats blending into the life of locals to discover a city.

Of course, tourist places have their interest, but I prefer to explore the hidden sides of the city.

My grandmother told us that, younger, she had flown over Dijon by plane. She had not been able to recognize the streets, because seen from the sky, Dijon looks like a big tree-filled park.

Indeed, each large square has its tree and its green space, forming pleasant freshness islands in summer. You can sit on a bench under a tree, listen to music, read, or simply watch the passersby.

The city has many alleys with half-timbered houses, reminding of Rouen in Normandy. However, the facades here are made of a different stone.

We then reached the square of 30 October 1870 where there is a monument representing the statue of the Resistance. According to the Internet, this statue commemorates a significant battle of the Franco-Prussian war, where the Dijonnais resisted the Baden troops. Although Dijon capitulated the next day, this resistance earned it the Legion of Honor 30 years later, in 1899.

While continuing our walk, my grandmother insisted on showing us Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity. From what we were able to retain, from her adolescence, Elizabeth had felt the religious calling. Despite her mother's initial reluctance, she entered the Carmel of Dijon on August 2, 1901, at the age of 21, under the name of Sister Elizabeth of the Trinity. She died at only 26 years old, on November 9, 1906, affected by Addison's disease.

Elizabeth of the Trinity was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1984 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2016. On the last photo above, you see the shrine containing her relics.

We then passed in front of the majestic Opera of Dijon. If the occasion arises, I would very much like to visit the interior.

In front is the Museum of Fine Arts, which I already visited several times when I was little.

We then reached the Liberation square, now entirely pedestrian and favorite of the Dijonnais. It is a popular gathering place that often hosts cultural events, concerts and celebrations, notably a large Christmas tree as well as an ice rink.

A little further, under the market halls, takes place every Tuesday morning a gigantic lively market where we bought cheese, seasonal vegetables and two baguettes.

The Cathedral of Dijon is also a real jewel. Recently, an ancient crypt was discovered there during archaeological excavations and restored.

We took tickets for a guided tour of this crypt located 10 meters underground. Despite an uninspiring guide, the crypt is magnificent. Sometimes, intimate masses are celebrated there.

We finished at the Darcy garden, a large park where I spent many summer afternoons as a child. So I wanted to show it to @altheana.

It had been more than 5 years since I had returned to Dijon. I now rediscover this city with an adult eye, which does not displease me.

Ma grand-mère habite Dijon, donc j'y vais depuis tout petit. Mais depuis que je suis entré dans la vie active, les occasions d'y aller se font rares.

La semaine dernière, profitant du jour férié et sachant que nos clients feraient sûrement pareil, nous avons sauté sur l'occasion, sachant que ma grand-mère serait ravie de nous voir.

C'est vraiment un endroit où il fait bon vivre. La ville est dynamique et a eu la chance d'être épargnée par les bombardements lors des différentes guerres. Ainsi, les immeubles ont conservé leur charme d'époque.

Nous n'avions pas établi de planning précis. Nous avons préféré suivre ma grand-mère dans sa routine, car rien ne vaut de se fondre dans la vie des locaux pour découvrir une ville.

Bien sûr, les lieux touristiques ont leur intérêt, mais je préfère explorer les facettes cachées de la ville.

Ma grand-mère nous racontait que, plus jeune, elle avait survolé Dijon en avion. Elle n'avait pas pu reconnaître les rues, car vue du ciel, Dijon ressemble à un grand parc arboré.

Effectivement, chaque grande place possède son arbre et son espace de verdure, formant d'agréables îlots de fraîcheur en été. Vous pouvez vous asseoir sur un banc sous un arbre, écouter de la musique, lire, ou simplement observer les passants.

La ville possède de nombreuses ruelles avec des maisons à colombages, rappelant Rouen en Normandie. Cependant, les façades ici sont faites d'une pierre différente.

Nous avons ensuite rejoint la place du 30 Octobre 1870 où se trouve un monument représentant la statue de la Résistance. D'après Internet, cette statue commémore une bataille significative de la guerre franco-prussienne, où les Dijonnais résistèrent aux troupes badoises. Bien que Dijon ait capitulé le lendemain, cette résistance lui valut la Légion d'honneur 30 ans plus tard, en 1899.

En continuant notre promenade, ma grand-mère a tenu à nous montrer Sainte Élisabeth de la Trinité. De ce que nous avons pu en retenir, dès son adolescence, Élisabeth avait ressenti l'appel religieux. Malgré les réticences initiales de sa mère, elle entra au Carmel de Dijon le 2 août 1901 à l'âge de 21 ans, sous le nom de sœur Élisabeth de la Trinité. Elle mourut à seulement 26 ans, le 9 novembre 1906, atteinte de la maladie d'Addison.

Élisabeth de la Trinité a été béatifiée par le pape Jean-Paul II en 1984 et canonisée par le pape François en 2016. Sur la dernière photo ci-dessus, vous voyez la châsse contenant ses reliques.

Nous sommes ensuite passés devant le majestueux Opéra de Dijon. Si l'occasion se présente, j'aimerais beaucoup en visiter l'intérieur.

En face se trouve le musée des Beaux-Arts, que j'ai déjà visité plusieurs fois quand j'étais petit.

Nous avons ensuite atteint la place de la Libération, désormais entièrement piétonne et favorite des Dijonnais. C'est un lieu de rassemblement populaire qui accueille souvent des événements culturels, concerts et célébrations, notamment un grand arbre de Noël ainsi qu'une patinoire.

Un peu plus loin, sous les halles, se tient chaque mardi matin un gigantesque marché animé où nous avons acheté du fromage, des légumes de saison et deux baguettes.

La Cathédrale de Dijon est un véritable joyau également. Récemment, une ancienne crypte y a été découverte lors de fouilles archéologiques et restaurée.

Nous avons pris des billets pour une visite guidée de cette crypte située à 10 mètres sous terre. Malgré une guide peu captivante, la crypte est magnifique. Parfois, des messes intimistes y sont célébrées.

Nous avons terminé par le jardin Darcy, un grand parc où j'ai passé beaucoup d'après-midi d'été enfant. Je voulais donc le montrer à @altheana.

Cela faisait plus de 5 ans que je n'étais pas retourné à Dijon. Je redécouvre maintenant cette ville avec un œil adulte, ce qui n'est pas pour me déplaire.
