Día de excursión en la montaña de Los Maleteros, Aragua (Venezuela) / Excursion day to Los Maleteros mountain, Aragua (Venezuela)

Saludos hivers. El contacto con la naturaleza es algo que me encanta así que cuando me dicen para ir a un lugar que no conozco es una oportunidad que no se debe desperdiciar 😃😁. A principios del mes pasado unos amigos nos invitaron a mi hermana y a mí a acompañarlos a una parcela que tienen en la montaña, y por supuesto dijimos que sí. Mi hermana ya había ido con ellos en otra ocasión así que para mí sería la primera vez en la zona montañosa del sector Los Maleteros en La Victoria (Aragua).

Hello hivers! I love being in nature, so when someone invites me to a place I've never been, it's an opportunity I can't pass up 😃😁. At the beginning of last month, some friends invited my sister and me to join them at a property they own in the mountains, and of course we said yes. My sister had already gone with them once before, so it would be my first time in the mountainous area of Los Maleteros in La Victoria (Aragua).

Fijamos un punto de encuentro, a las 7 de la mañana, ahí nos reunimos con Betty y Johan, nuestros amigos, ellos son esposos, primero pasamos por la casa de los padres de Johan donde su mamá nos recibió con una taza de café ☕😊, estuvimos un rato ahí y después empezamos nuestro recorrido por la calle hasta llegar a la parte rural donde empieza a predominar la naturaleza. Una vez que hemos pasado el primer paso de río, lo que nos espera es vegetación abundante, árboles muy altos, senderos de tierra, ríos y algunas pequeñas parcelas donde las personas tienen sembradíos de frutas y vegetales, todo eso acompañado con una maravillosa banda sonora, la de los sonidos de la montaña 🎶🦜🦗🐿️🐦🐒.

We set a meeting point at 7:00 a.m. There we met Betty and Johan, our friends; they're married. First, we stopped at Johan's parents' house, where his mother welcomed us with a cup of coffee ☕😊. We spent some time there, and then we started our walk along the road until we reached the rural area where nature begins to dominate. Once we crossed the first river, we were greeted by abundant vegetation, very tall trees, dirt paths, rivers, and some small plots of land where people have planted fruits and vegetables, all accompanied by a wonderful soundtrack, the sounds of the mountains 🎶🦜🦗🐿️🐦🐒.

La mayoría de los sembradíos están en la parte baja de la montaña, entre ellos vimos lechoza (papaya), pepino, aguacate, parchita, cambur (banana), plátano, cítricos como mandarina y limón, maíz, etc. Nuestro amigo Johan nos contó que antes toda esta zona estaba bajo el control de una familia adinerada que se habían apoderado de la zona y se consideraban los dueños de la misma, incluso estaba prohibido andar por ahí y había hasta guardias vigilando el área, con el pasar de los años y gracias a la intervención del estado y a algunas políticas implememtadas durante el gobierno del presidente Chávez, entregaron concesiones y tierras para que las personas pudieran sembrar y producir.

Most of the crops are located on the lower slopes of the mountain. Among them, we saw papaya, cucumber, avocado, passion fruit, bananas, plantains, citrus fruits like tangerines and lemons, corn, and more. Our friend Johan told us that this entire area used to be controlled by a wealthy family who had seized it and considered themselves its owners, walking around was forbidden, and there were even guards patrolling the area. Over the years, thanks to government intervention and policies implemented during President Chávez's administration, land grants were awarded so that people could plant and produce.

El día estaba con una temperatura muy agradable, el paisaje es de bosque y hay muchos pasos de río, aún estaban con un nivel bajo y con muy poca agua porque la temporada de lluvia aún no ha empezado al 100%, sin embargo, y a pesar de eso, todo se veía muy hermoso y mágico. Los monos rápidamente detectaron nuestra presencia y empezaron a hacer sus característicos gritos que no sabemos si eran de bienvenida o para que nos fuéramos de su territorio 😬😂😂.

The day was very pleasantly warm, the landscape is forested with many river crossings, although the water level was still low and there wasn't much because the rainy season has not fully started yet. Despite this, everything looked beautiful and magical. The monkeys quickly detected our presence and began making their characteristic calls, which we couldn't tell if they were a welcome or a way to tell us to leave their territory 😬😂😂.

Una de las cosas que más me gustó es que los senderos son estrechos y conservan ese toque salvaje, aunque Johan nos contó que más que nada eso es porque las personas que suben hacia sus parcelas no los han limpiado para despejarlos de la maleza y las ramas secas. Finalmente llegamos a la parcela de nuestros amigos Betty y Johan, la parcela se llama La tortuga 🐢, Betty nos contó que Johan le puso ese nombre porque así le dicen a su papá, ya que se parece a una tortuga jajaja.

One of the things I liked most was that the trails are narrow and retain that wild feel, although Johan told us that this is mostly because the people who go up to their plots haven't cleared them of weeds and dry branches. Finally, we arrived at our friends Betty and Johan's plot, called La Tortuga (The Turtle) 🐢. Betty told us that Johan named it that because that's what they call his dad, since he looks like a turtle, hahaha.

La parcela tiene una parte plana y otra que es más vertical ya que está al pie de la montaña, ellos tienen árboles de aguacate, mandarina, limón, guayaba, arándanos, cambur, papaya, plátano y también han sembrado yuca, ají dulce, maní, entre otros. Al principio sembraban mas que todo maíz, yuca y caraotas negras pero cuando los jabalíes empezaron a darse cuenta hacían de las suyas y se comían todo 😬🤦🏻‍♀️ así que poco a poco dejaron de sembrar esos rubros ya que pedían la cosecha 😕, y por eso optaron por enfocarse en los árboles frutales ya que los jabalíes no pueden comerse las frutas porque no las alcanzan jajaja 🤷🏻‍♀️.

The plot of our friends has a flat section and another that's steeper since it's at the foot of the mountain. They have avocado, tangerine, lemon, guava, blueberry, banana, papaya, and plantain trees, and they've also planted yucca, sweet peppers, peanuts, and other crops. At first, they mostly planted corn, yucca, and black beans, but when the wild boars started noticing, they took advantage of the situation and ate everything 😬🤦🏻‍♀️. So, little by little, they stopped planting those crops because they were ruining the harvest 😕, and that's why they decided to focus on fruit trees since the wild boars can't reach the fruit hahaha 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Nuestro paseo no era nada mas recreativo, queríamos ayudar así que agarramos las mangueras, llenamos los tobos y empezamos a trabajar 👩🏻‍🌾🌳🌱🍋🥑🫐🍌, afortunadamente hay agua que baja de la montaña y de ahí se surten para regar la parcela. Mientras Betty, mi hermana y yo regábamos, Johan se puso a cortar algunas papayas y plátanos. El sol tomaba fuerza y ya se sentía más el calor matutino, hicimos una pausa para comer unos pancitos dulces que había traído Betty y seguimos un rato mas para regar lo que faltaba.

Our walk wasn't just for recreation, we wanted to help, so we grabbed the hoses, filled the buckets, and got to work 👩🏻‍🌾🌳🌱🍋🥑🫐🍌. Fortunately, there's water flowing down from the mountain, and that's where they get their supply to irrigate the plot. While Betty, my sister, and I were watering, Johan started cutting some papayas and bananas. The sun was getting stronger, and the morning heat was becoming more intense. We took a break to eat some sweet rolls that Betty had brought and then continued watering the rest of the plot.

El lugar es muy bonito, Johan nos dijo que le gustaría hacer una casa y mudarse a vivir ahí, lejos de la ciudad y de todo ese estrés, la verdad es que viendo el bienestar mental que significa estar entre la.montaña, pues no es una idea tan descabellada jajaja. Johan nos regaló tres papayas verdes para que hiciéramos dulce de lechoza, un dulce tradicional venezolano, y también nos regaló muchos plátanos verdes para hacer tostones (chips) 😋. Dejamos todo ordenado y comenzamos a bajar.

The place is beautiful. Johan told us he would like to build a house and move there, far from the city and all that stress. Honestly, seeing the mental well-being that comes from being in the mountains, it's not such a crazy idea, hahaha. Johan gave us three green papayas to make dulce de lechoza (papaya in syrup), a traditional Venezuelan dessert, and he also gave us lots of green plantains to make tostones (chips) 😋. We leave everything organized and started walking down.

El plan que seguía era pararnos un rato en una pequeña cascada que está en la montaña conocida como La pared. Aunque ya estaba haciendo calor, la abundante vegetación que rodea los senderos mantiene el camino fresco y con sombra.

The plan was to stop for a while at a small waterfall on the mountain known as La Pared (The Wall). Although it was already getting hot, the abundant vegetation surrounding the trails kept the path cool and shady.

Al llegar a la cascada, Betty fue la primera y la única que se metió jajaja, yo no me quería mojar pero sí me quité los zapatos y las medias para disfrutar de sentir el agua del río pasando entre mis pies 👣😌, mi hermana también se quitó los zapatos, y Johan tampoco se quiso mojar, aunque él puede hacerlo las veces que quiera cada vez que va a la parcela jajaja.

When we got to the waterfall, Betty was the first and only one to go in, hahaha. I didn't want to get wet, but I did take off my shoes and socks to enjoy feeling the river water flowing between my feet 👣😌. My sister also took off her shoes, and Johan didn't want to get wet either, although he can do it as many times as he wants whenever he goes to the plot, hahaha.

Estuvimos mas de media hora ahí y vimos a varias personas subiendo hacia sus parcelas y también a otras bajando. Algunos suben en moto pero la mayoría lo hace a pie. Tener una moto es de gran ayuda, sobretodo al momento de bajar la cosecha.

We were there for over half an hour and saw several people going up to their plots and others coming down. Some go up on motorcycles, but most of them they walk. Having a motorcycle is a great help, especially when it comes to bringing the harvest down.

La pared, esta cascada tiene un muro que construyeron los dueños de una antigua hacienda que había por esa zona llamada La Mora para direccionar el agua y poder sprovecharla para su beneficio / The wall, this waterfall has a wall that was built by the owners of an old hacienda called La Mora that was in that area to direct the water and be able to use it for their benefit

En el camino hay muchos árboles frutales que forman parte de la montaña y que deben tener 30, 40 e incluso más años, algunos habrán sido sembrados por gente, pero la mayoría son producto del descuido de alguna ardilla, las deposiciones de las aves o lo que sobró del almuerzo de algún mono. Entre los que nos encontramos hay árboles de mamón y el infaltable y siempre presente mango 🥭😋. Sin duda que los animales que viven en esta montaña tienen una gran variedad para su menú.

Along the way, there are many fruit trees that are part of the mountain and must be 30, 40, or even more years old. Some may have been planted by people, but most are the result of a squirrel's carelessness, bird droppings, or a monkey's leftover lunch. Among them are mamoncillo trees and the ever-present mango 🥭😋. Without a doubt, the animals that live on this mountain have a wide variety of choices for their meals.

Al salir de la montaña y pisar nuevamente el asfalto de la calle nos sentíamos renovados, relajados y contentos, sin duda que el contacto con la naturaleza es lo mejor 👌🏻😌. Me encantó conocer esta zona de los Maleteros, jamás imaginé que escondiera tanta belleza. Acordamos volver a ir y esta vez prometo que si me meteré en la cascada 😂😁.

Leaving the mountain and stepping back onto the asphalt street, we felt refreshed, relaxed, and happy. Without a doubt, being in contact with nature is the best! 👌🏻😌. I loved discovering this area of Los Maleteros, I never imagined it held so much beauty. We agreed to go back, and this time I promise I'll definitely go in the waterfall! 😂😁.
