Hindu mythology, Sati, the goddess and wife of lord Shiva, self-immolated in a sacrificial fire (yajna) to protest against her father, Daksha, who had insulted her husband Shiva. This act was a demonstration of her loyalty and love for Shiva. Lord Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra dismembered the body of Sati, Shiva's consort, into 51 pieces,These pieces fell at different locations on Earth, which then became the sacred sites known as Shakti Peethas.
