EN-UA Music for Peace: Star conductor Kent Nagano in Kyiv / Музика заради миру

Yesterday, I had the great fortune to be at an extraordinary cultural event. In peacetime, it would have been quite a sensation. But today, in the conditions of a full-scale war, it has become an act of solidarity of the international artistic community with the Ukrainian people.

Учора мала неабияке щастя відвідати одну непересічну культурну подію, яка в мирні часи була б неабиякою сенсацією, та сьогодні, в умовах повномасштабної війни, насамперед стала актом солідарності міжнародної мистецької спільноти з українським народом. У рамках мистецького проєкту «Музика заради миру» симфонічним оркестром Національної опери України імені Тараса Шевченка вперше диригував зірковий диригент Кент Нагано, чий візит в Україну став справжньою подією в світі мистецтва.

The Ukrainian premiere of the work "Cantata in tempore belli" by the modern German clarinetist, conductor, and composer Jörg Widmann was performed by a world-famous Maestro, Kent Nagano. By the way, Jörg Widmann is one of the most performed composers in the world, and his presence at the premiere in Kyiv was no less significant.

Під орудою всесвітньовідомого Маестро прозвучала українська премʼєра твору «Кантата часів війни» (Cantata in tempore belli) сучасного німецького кларнетиста, диригента та композитора Йорга Відманна. До слова, Йорг Відманн є одним із найбільш виконуваних композиторів у світі, тож його присутність на прем'єрі в Києві теж була не менш знакова.

But my expectations were exaggerated in terms of the emotional reaction to this concert. And it's not about the music or the performance itself, but about my perception. During the concert, I caught myself thinking that everything I hear is perceived not with my heart but with my mind, that I listen to music as a professional musicologist, resorting to analyzing the form of the work and the composer's style. There are few emotions, dulled experiences. It would seem that the theme of the cantata, dedicated to war and peace, which contained many quotes from German poetry and the Bible, should have touched me, but the experience we, Ukrainians, experienced goes far beyond what the composer wanted to convey. We feel everything much more deeply. Yes, the music is wonderful; the performance was brilliant. However, when you live every day, for three years in a row, in conditions of a bloody and cruel war, all calls to end the war that we did not start turn into an empty sound. Unfortunately, all wars are decided on the battlefield, and peace does not come by itself. And the only thing left for us is to continue to fight, create and live.

Але мої очікування були перебільшеними з точки зору емоційної реакції на цей концерт. І справа не в самій музиці чи виконанні, а в моєму сприйнятті. Під час концерту зловила себе на думці, що все, що я чую, — сприймаю не серцем, а розумом, що я слухаю музику як професійний музикознавець, вдаючись до аналізу форми твору та стилю композитора. Небагато емоцій, притуплені переживання. Здавалося б, тема кантати, присвячена війні та миру, у якій було чимало цитат з німецької поезії та Біблії, мали б мене зачепити, проте пережитий нами, українцями, досвід виходить далеко за межі того, що хотів донести композитор. Ми все відчуваємо значно глибше. Так, музика чудова, виконання було блискучим. Утім, коли ти щодня, вже три роки поспіль живеш в умовах кровопролитної й жорстокою війни, усі заклики до припинення війни, яку ми не починали, перетворюються на порожній звук. На жаль, всі війни вирішуються на полі бою, і мир не настає сам собою. І єдине, що нам залишається, так це продовжувати боротися, творити та жити.

So, Ukrainians continue to visit the opera and art galleries and organize book festivals despite the war. We continue to live. As the leading Ukrainian poet and translator, Pavlo Tychyna wrote:

I don't ask anyone for the right to live.
In order to live, I will break all the shackles.
I affirm, I affirm, because I live.

Тож попри війну, українці відвідують оперу, картинні галереї, влаштовують книжкові фестивалі. Ми продовжуємо жити. І як писав поет і перекладач Павло Тичина:

Щоб жить — ні в кого права не питаюсь.
Щоб жить — я всі кайдани розірву.
Я стверджуюсь, я утверждаюсь, бо я живу.
