Mycro macro

Not too long ago I was doing a tidy up in my home office and came across this little camera, originally my dad's. I left it on my desk for a few weeks until I decided to take a few photos of it just for fun. Unfortunately, I didn't really know how best to present it and so what you see here is about the best of the bunch. I tried some darker shots, not sure what that style is called, and well...they came out sort of shit in my opinion, but I'm thick-skinned and can take the criticism if the shots draw any.

cf.png

The Mycro is what's called a subminature camera and hails from Japan, originally released by a company around 1939 and sold throughout World War Two and beyond. By the 1950's it had gained a cult following and the original company name was changed to Mycro (MYCRO CAMERA COMPANY. LTD)

I'm not sure when my dad got this camera however, being a Mycro IIIA which was released in around 1953, I'd imagine it to have been about then. My dad would have been in his mid-20's at that time and working as a school teacher so I guess he had the money to spend on a little fad-item like this.

9 (3).png

The camera came with a pretty cool brown leather case and looks and operates just like any other camera. One could also get a tripod and filter for it however I have neither and am not sure if my dad ever got them.

I'm not sure if this camera still works and I'd need 17.5mm film to find out. It was capable of ten exposures from a roll and I guess it took a reasonable photo considering that many thousands of people bought one...or maybe the temptation to buy this novelty/cult camera was simply too difficult to deny.

20230414_153352.jpg

My dad's camera isn't in very good condition, it's seventy years old after all and carried some wear and tear with some of the plating beginning to come off. I wish it worked though as I'd be interested to see what photos were possible and it'd be nice to take some shots on a camera my dad once used.

Alas, I can't make it work so I'll have it as a keepsake and pass it on to my niece of nephew when the time is right, I think they'll appreciate having something that their granddad once owned and used.

9 (4).png

I don't suppose anyone here has had any experience with, or exposure to, this camera before, but if you have and also have some shots taken on one I'd be interested to see. I don't expect the quality to be very good, certainly nothing like what a full-sized camera would produce I guess, but it'd be interesting to see nonetheless.

So that's it for this post on my dad's Mycro camera. Feel free to comment below whether about this post, a micro-camera you may have had or have, or even an old camera you have laying about the place. I'd like to hear from you.

Yeah, I think cute may have been part of the design brief when they were developing this camera.

What a cute little camera! This is not unsolicited advice, but if I were you, I'd totally try and track down some film for it and try it out. I love that it came with it's own little leather carry case! This is the kind of thing that I would buy because it's different and would probably become a collector's item.

This is not unsolicited advice

Lol, but it actually is. Although, in this case I agree with it and have been thinking of trying to chase down some film. Let's just call your unsolicited advice, active enthusiasm in advising me, without being asked, on what you think I should do. It sounds so much better right? (Well, maybe not.)

Ok, you know I'm only joking right, teasing you a little.

This is the kind of thing that I would buy because it's different and would probably become a collector's item.

I think you mean:

"This is the kind of thing that I would buy because I'm a spy."

🤣

You make me laugh. Yes, it would be very useful as a spy tool.

Yes, ok I suck at not given unsolicited advice and I would have expected you to tease me for it. I like the term "active enthusiasm" - that's far closer to what it was intended as. I wonder if there are even still places that develop film, I haven't had a film camera for so long I wouldn't even know where to start looking.

Have a good one Galen. Thanks for the chuckle.

I sometimes tease people mercilessly, but only people I like. I actually call teasing, active anti-positivititty.

Yep, I typed titty.

Lol, I don't mind you teasing me about it, I knew you would pick up on it while I was typing it 😁

Hope you had a nice weekend.

How cool, I love how small and tender it is, I am also a lover of old things, everything that our parents or grandparents had saved for many years, today these things become relics.

Relics indeed, and valued keepsakes that I feel fortunate to have.

I guess your father is very good at keeping something.
I wonder how he was able to keep something for seventy years.
That is a lot

I have items that have been in my family for much longer than seventy years thankfully. I respect tradition and have some sentimentality about me I guess, so I keep things. My dad is dead, as I stated in this post, so I have to.

Thanks Erikah, There was only so many ways I could shoot this thing I guess. I suppose there's probably things I didn't think of, but I'm a rather blunt instrument after all. I'm really quite happy to have this little camera and excited to pass it on when the time is right, as I will do with other such things.

Thanks mate, I liked that photo too. I was trying something with low light, I'm not sure it worked out, but overall the photos are ok for a scrubber like me.

Very interesting little camera. It does remind me of something from a 007 movie or the like 😀. It is so cool you have something like that of your father's. It would be something else if you could get it to work.

I hope to pass on some small family keepsakes when I am gone. Maybe my kids will even keep some of my own trash, who knows.

It's pretty cool. One day I'll see if I can track down some film for it, I'm not hopeful, but it's worth a try. If I was to get some I'd post about it.

I have many keepsakes, some much older than this camera, which I'll be passing along to my niece and nephew, and, of course, there's my own stuff to hand on to them as well. I have some pretty legit knives my nephew will get eventually. @mrbonkers is not five years old yet though, so it'll have to wait, maybe a year or two. 😂

Yeah, his parents may not like you passing those on too early.

Yeah, I call my stuff trash, but I guess I have some cool stuff too.

Yeah, his parents may not like you passing those on too early.

So...this means my guns too? OK, I'll have to come up with a new strategy then. :)

I call my stuff trash, but I guess I have some cool stuff too.

I figured as much.

Wow really nice, lucky to own one and also it has sentimental value which makes it even more important.
Even if it is not functional, I think it remains a beautiful memory to keep.

Very nice pictures taken as well as the post ... you know that among other things you made me want to look for a similar machine, it would be nice to have one as a collector's item ... I'm already looking for it heh heh!

Thanks mate, it's pretty cool huh? I reckon it would work, I just need the film. It's in good condition except for some of the plating being a little pitted. Maybe I should get some film (if it's available) and try it out.

Thanks for your comments on my post, I hope you're able to find a Mycro too. We could be the Mycro brothers!

Eh eh and if I told you that I found a Mycro?
I'm negotiating with the seller, let's see if I can get it at a good price... I have my birthday on Monday, I could give it to myself.
From Monday we could practically already be Mycro's brothers!

However you know that as far as the film is concerned I'm having trouble finding it, maybe I have to see specialized photography sites.

You know I love commenting on your posts because they are always of a high standard and quality and it's always interesting and fun to read them my friend.

Twenty three years old on Monday huh? Well, you can be my younger Mycro bro.

Thanks for your nice comments about my posts, I actually really appreciate it when people give feedback like that; it means I'm doing something right.

eh eh 23 years would be a dream... in my part they say like this: "yes, 23, but from one leg!" heh heh!
In reality it is just a few more ... just 18 more; let's say that the first year of my second half is about to end

The way I think you are doing exactly right; Maybe I love your writing style but I love reading your posts and I really wish I could find more like yours around because lately I'm having a hard time finding interesting reads on Hive.
I always look forward to your post and that of a few other authors, I won't name names for fairness but either good or bad You know who I love to read besides you.
Hope the quality goes up again soon.

I send you a hug my friend!

I'm glad you like them. I was reasonably happy with them although they didn't do what I hoped they would. I don't use editing programs to edit my photos though, so I guess I'll never get the results others get. I don't mind, I like a more honest approach to it anyway.

Yeah, you're right, it's because the macro lens gets in so close. Hmm, maybe I should do a macro photo shoot of parts of my body. I wonder how that would go down with the blockchain.

It's small huh? I have actually used it for another photo I took a long while back for a post as below. I really like this image, but wanted to take some new ones for this particular post.

It's a cool little camera and I'm looking forward to handing it on to one of the little ones, when they're old enough to appreciate it. I'm hoping one of them will show an interest in photography, possibly @smallsteps, and that's who will get it.

The film seems to be 17.5 mm?

Yep, exactly as I said in my post. Do you not read them?

0

I read it, but somehow my brain registered it as 17 mm instead of 17.5. I'm not sure why... I wonder if there's a way to create some film, or modify something that's available?

0

I believe it is cut down 35mm, without the perforations on the outer edges. I think film cutters are available to buy so I assume it can be created, although it seems a lot of effort to go to for something that may not work. I'll see what happens, I might go to the trouble of investigating it.

My goodness, that's a beautiful thing!...I've never seen a micro camera of this brand!...But it looks like one of those things you want to have forever!...I'm glad it's still there with you and it belonged to your father... That's kind of lovely... Thank you very much for sharing these photos (which are pretty good in my opinion, especially the one where the camera is with the beautiful mini leather lining)... Nice article to see...Greetings and happy weekend @galenkp friend!

I like it, and especially with the emotional attachment, even better.

While you probably wouldn't get (what you would consider) a technically perfect shot with the camera, I like how all the different cameras have their own personality.

There are a lot of camera sites with aficionados looking for film or someone looking to sell the film. It would be fun to see if you could score some and take a few shots.

I like the way you took the shots and put them together.

Hi, Galen!

Surprisingly, eBay had 17.5mm film that expired in the 1930s. There were actually quite a few. Sounds like it might be happening. :)

I don't suppose anyone here has had any experience with, or exposure to, this camera before, but if you have and also have some shots taken on one I'd be interested to see

Nope, I'm afraid not. Given the history though, it would be pretty cool to get some film for it and get a few photos of things you are into or that maybe remind you of your Dad, it doesn't matter if the quality is lacking, it's more the fact that it was his and you'll be creating new images all these years later with the same hardware. There's something cool about that, that's my take on it anyway.

I'm going to work on getting some film when I get some time for it. You know how life can be busy, ai have to prioritise. I'll make it happen though, and if I get some photos, no matter how bad they are, I'll post them.

hehehe this is seriously the cutest thing ever!!! You HAVE to find some film to take some shots!!! I am dying to see what that thing can produce! hehehehe

sorry - haven't been around much lately. Life tossing lots of lemons into my lemonade! hehehe but just wanted to stop in and say hi :)

and now... i run again LOL have a fantastic weekend, you :)

It's a cool little keepsake right? I'm glad I cared enough to keep it and hope those I pass it on to will be also.

Life has to take precedence over the blockchain, this is all just make believe, it's in the offline world where our lives play out. Hopefully things take an upward tilt for you.

Happy weekend.

I'm built backwards... LOL

for me - I've found that the offline life has become so make-believe and surreal, and the friends and connections I've made here in the online have been so much more real. I know it's not that way for everyone! but.. for me - it's just so.... tangible and connected!!! And the 10 or so that I've connected with in the "in-between" - it's just been some of the most impactful times in my life. pretty wild to experience! so much so - that i simply want more of it! LOL

so I'm actually taking a temporary break from the online - to delve back into the offline - to make a way for the ability to bring the online - INTO my offline.

how's that for a mindbender! hahahahaha

Thank you for the hopeful wishes from you! It means a lot! and thanks for being part of the "online real" to me! hehehe maybe one day i'll meet you in the place where the lines blur and we will share a bit of both! hehehe

until then - enjoy BOTH :)
