My two nuts

avatar
(Edited)

I recently decided to photograph my two nuts, just for something a little different, figuring it might be a challenge to make the photographs interesting, and it was.

I headed out to Tony & Mark's, a cool market I shop at a lot, and looked for my nuts discovering that it's difficult to find nuts in their shells these days. I had a choice of two, walnuts and pistachio nuts, so I scooped them into my hands, deposited them in my nutbag, made the purchase and headed home to do the photography.

Once done I started thinking about this post and how I could possibly present a dozen images of nuts taken with my Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (using my macro lens) in a way that might be even remotely interesting...my nuts themselves are not enough to hold people's interest I figured...I had to do something a little more interesting than photos of my nuts.

I decided I'd select a few and name the photographs then add a brief description of why I chose the name. This is the result.

Diversity

There's many different nuts available, but despite looking and tasting differently, they're all just nuts; it's sort of like humans...we're all the same, but different. I chose to name this photograph diversity because the two nuts, totally different from one another, sit alongside each other in perfect harmony despite their differences. If only humankind could do the same.

fuck-nuts (11).png

Birth of the green tree frog

This pistachio reminds me of a green tree frog emerging from a cocoon...Yes, I know frogs don't come out of cocoons but it's my photo and I can make it up as I go along right?

fuck-nuts (10).png

Nut soldiers on parade

In my bid to take photos that were a little interesting I lined up these pistachios side by side and, when I looked at it later, they reminded me of soldiers on the parade ground. These would fail epically though, the one to the right is too far away from the middle one...I'd hate to be them, they're in for some extra PT (physical training) for sure.

fuck-nuts (12).png

The womb

I think this one is fairly self-explanatory. The nut curled up snugly inside the shell makes me think of a mother's womb with a child growing inside. Fortunately, women don't split completely in two when they give birth like this nut though.

fuck-nuts (7).png

Wrinkled testicle

This is another reasonably obvious one. I'm sure most if you have seen a testicle up close, you don't have to confirm that unless you want to, but if you haven't this is pretty close to what you'll see...I know there's many out there who will love this one. The name for this photograph came pretty easily, like testicles often do.

testicle.png

Take your finger off my brain

Walnuts always remind me of brains once they're cracked open and this one is no exception. You can even see the left and right sides. I don't think it'd take much effort to work out what's going on inside this brain though. I once saw a person with his finger so far up his nose he must have been touching his brain...This photograph is dedicated to him, his name was Davide S. (And yeah, I think he ate the booger.)

fuck-nuts (6).png

Two nuts in my hand

OK, this title isn't cryptic at all, it's rather obvious in fact. That's my hand, and there's two nuts in it. It's not the first time, neither will it be the last.

fuck-nuts (4).png

Boneyard

Nuts don't have bones, but this shot reminds me of prehistoric boneyards of the dinosaurs where a group of them have gone to die like they depict in the movies, the bones picked clean and left to bleach in the sun. As I was taking photos some of the nuts were getting eaten so yep, they died and here's their bones.

fuck-nuts (5).png

The break out

This makes me think of the nut becoming so big that it's shell bursts open scattering shell in all directions and leaving the inner nut sitting in place still. I was going to call this one noggin nut as it reminded me of a head with the top of the skull cut away revealing the brain but I figure if you want to think of it that way you can rename it for yourself.

galenkp.png

Vein brain

I think walnuts are bloody ugly things and this proves it. This one looks like a brain, like they all do, and seems veiny...or maybe they're brain worms riddled throughout?

fuck-nuts (8).png

Flip top brain

I know, there's a brain-theme going on here. This title is a play on the convertible roof a vehicle has, you know the ones that flip backwards right? I guess the difference is, this flip top shell isn't ever going to become intact again.

fuck-nuts (2).png

Emergence of the dragon

I imagine this one as a dragon's egg and the baby dragon inside is beginning the process of breaking himself out. You can see the first couple of shell pieces already knocked out in the foreground and inside...is that a dragon I spy? Look closely and you'll see.

fuck-nuts (9).png

I'll admit to getting some enjoyment out of the process of playing around with my nuts and the photography went fairly smoothly with only a few duds. I've tried to present rather mundane pictures of nuts with some sort of interest and I hope I've succeeded; if not, it's too bad, I can't/won't change it now. Feel free to comment if you'd like.

Note: No nuts were harmed in the making of this post...and if you believe that you're fecking bonkers!

A really nice post, different and original, I really like it.
The photos are very beautiful but it shows that you know how to use your camera well; the one I loved the most is the first one, also for the meaning you gave it, it's a thought that I have too.

Obviously I love all the others, the one with aligned pistachios is really beautiful, the most original in my opinion is the one with the tree frog that comes out of her shell 😁

Thanks mate, I had the camera out trying some shots of something else and it wasn't working...After getting annoyed at my lack of photography skills I decided my nuts would make a good (or bad) subject. I enjoyed the process and ate all the fucken nuts afterwards. (The pistachios anyway, I'm not a fan of walnuts.)

Who would have thought green tree frogs come out out of pistachio nuts...I have the proof though. He's the little fellow that emerged out of the nut pictured above.

Eh eh it must have been a very big place to contain a tree frog like this!

However, I also don't like nuts, I only eat them in certain dishes.
As a man from southern Italy, however, I love pistachio, I also make pesto with it.

Pistachio pesto would be nice I think, never tried it. I'll look out for it. I like pistachio ice cream...although vanilla is my favourite.

The pistachio pesto is very good, I often put it on pizza together with mortadella and stracchino, obviously I make the pizza and with these ingredients it is better white even if I always prefer it with tomato.

I love ice cream, my favorite flavor is coffee!

A bit of an odd idea for a post, but you made it compelling. I mean, I read it. I was curious where you were going with things and how much you were going to commit to the idea.

It isn't always easy to get the lighting right on product photography, especially when using a white background. Well done on that and on taking a random idea and making it into an interesting post.

A bit of an odd idea for a post

Have you seen some of the utter garbage posted on Hive? If you follow my downvotes you'll find plenty.

I don't really know what I'm doing as far as photography goes, but now and then something comes out ok, that's what this post was about; the reasonable shots. I could have dropped twelve photos and no words like some of the wankers around the place, but I added nine hundred words to show that I care about what I present on my posts. I had fun, that's all that matters. Look out for my testicle post coming up soon.

I'm sorry, I may have put what I said badly. I didn't mean it as a criticism. Maybe "random" would have been a better word choice. It's actually a great exercise in creativity, like those abstract writing exercises they give in university that say things like "write 1000 words on the letter Z".

I had fun, that's all that matters

And I enjoyed reading it 😃

Ah ok, yeah I took it to mean my post was fucken shit. All good though.

Maybe "random" would have been a better word choice.

Random for sure. I came up with the idea a few weeks ago and haven't had the chance to get the photos. I have some other ideas to do similar...none revolve around sausages...or do they?

Thanks for reading, I appreciate it.

I am not saying my nuts are small...

I am saying I do not care to nibble on nuts. Except for peanuts. Those small tasty nuts are very common here in the south. They roast them in boiling water. Why does that sound almost painful?

Your post kinda blew my nuts mind and kicked me in the head nuts. I am still unsure what to think of it?

Ironically, i was drawn to the textures on the surfaces you displayed your nuts upon. The first white ones look like paper towels. Leave it to me to over-focus on the only thing not intended for viewing pleasures. hahaha

I have always been curious to know how/why people with nut allergies are or can be allergic to peanuts. Not that you had any in your post, but peanuts are legumes and not actual nuts. So, are those people allergic to peas and beans as well.... food for thought.

I have one of those photographic light box things, just a super-cheap one and there's several coloured backgrounds that I can interchange; I used the black and wite ones in this post. I'm still exploring what I can do with it but I've managed some decent results here and there. Paper towels would work too I guess.

I don't get it how there's nut allergies these days. Back in my day, if I said I had nut allergies my mum would have stuffed peanuts down my throat until I got over the allergies. Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating here, but you know what I mean I think. I wonder what the next fad-allergy will be.

I was hoping for some

This is one nutty comment section, that we have to agree on.

I love that little guy in Ice Age with the acorn. Cracks me up every time.

He's criminally underrated I'd say; yet, the ones who love him can't get enough of his random little scenes. Him and his little nut have wreaked so much havoc in those movies, but it's usually the other characters who are paying the price haha.

Oh, I have to agree. I bet even the creators didn't realize back then, that Scrat would end up being the one who stole the show haha.

Hey man, I took the Lee Enfield out to the farm last night, to cull with, for the first time ever. I'm doing a post on Saturday or Sunday. It went well...Makes me respect and appreciate my more modern equipment though. Took five roos and a fox at between 150-250m and the SMLE performed flawlessly.

Anyway, you'll see on the weekend.

I wouldn't like my chances with the iron sites much beyond 200m.
Kinda wasted on vermin unlikely to enjoy the historical significance of being dispatched by such an iconic rifle. Henry's at the Avalon Air Show with my old man this weekend, so I'm expecting some excited photos from him too.

The .303 British (180gr) soft points did what they were supposed to. Good on the roos, overkill on the fox, which is why I could only photograph his front section.

Avalon AS would be cool, I'd love to go someday.

Macro is such fun. Well, as long your subject is nice and still :) Can I ask what lens did you use with your Olympus for these shots?
