Winter Wanderings in Vienna: Fog, Clouds, and Pancakes

If I had to resume my December trip to Vienna in just a few words then it would surely be: cold, mysterious, and undeniably magical.

For five days, I explored the city cloaked in cloudy skies and soft veils of fog. Though the weather refused to reveal the golden rays of the sun, it offered something even more enchanting: an atmosphere straight out of a winter fairy tale. And I could see this coming from the view my friends and I had from the airplane, where even if the sun was slowly setting, we could already feel the bitter wind and cold atmosphere.

Each morning, I set out with my travel buddies, bundled up against the chill, ready to explore Vienna’s cultural and historical gems. The skies remained heavy with clouds, and a gentle mist often hung in the air, softening the city’s sharp outlines.

One of the first landscapes we observed was to see the fog wrapped itself around the Aquarium Haus des Meeres, creating an almost dreamlike scene. Still from the same place, we also managed to get a speechless view over the town, with just a few buildings being at least as tall as the one we were exploring at that time.

Funny thing, many places in Vienna are asking for a little fortune for you to make your way to the top and capture one of these pictures, while if you visit the aquarium you will be able to capture it at no extra cost from the visiting ticket which already offers a lot of experience within.

Walking through the fog-muted streets, we found ourselves appreciating details we might have otherwise overlooked, such as the intricate ironwork on balconies, the warm glow of cafes beckoning from behind foggy windows, and the rhythmic clatter of trams echoing through the mist.

The Schonbrunn Palace stood like a ghostly apparition in the fog, its Baroque elegance softened by the weather. And even if we didn't explore it on the inside, we had a great time creating some unforgettable memories even in front of it with a rare picture where we all have our eyes open and don't fool around haha.

The Christmas markets, despite the weather, were a highlight. The scent of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts filled the air, and twinkling lights pierced through the fog, creating pockets of warmth and joy. We savoured way too little from the local traditional dishes but it still generated the festive spirit despite the overcast skies.

But even so, I still consider returning to Vienna one day which is not during the Christmas markets because these tend to overcrowd locations and make it almost impossible to visit the tourist attractions themselves, this being one of the main reasons we dropped some locations from our 'must-see' list, during our time in Vienna.

After long days of exploration, evenings were reserved for cosy moments back at our accommodation. One of my favourite rituals was whipping up a batch of pancakes to share with my friends. The kitchen filled with the comforting aroma of sizzling batter was one of the most beautiful sounds back then, which was quickly accompanied by topping the golden stacks with everything from honey to chocolate spread and fruit jam.

With plates piled high, we gathered in the living room, wrapping ourselves in blankets as we watched movies. The simple pleasure of good food and great company made these evenings some of the most memorable parts of the trip and also a guilty pleasure to end the cold days like this, instead of losing the notion of time while being out there and exploring, which usually happens during our trips together.

While sunny skies might be ideal for perfect travel memories, there’s a quiet beauty in foggy, cloudy days. Vienna revealed a different side of itself, one that was mysterious, serene, and contemplative. The weather encouraged us to slow down, savouring each moment rather than rushing from one landmark to the next.

As I look back on those five days, I’m grateful for the fog and clouds that wrapped Vienna in their embrace, a thing that back then I didn't appreciate thinking that it would ruin pretty much our plans, as with our bodies numb from the first hours spent outside the accomodation, we could barely find any more motivation to explore the city further. But now I realize that fog made the city feel like a living painting, filled with depth and nuance and it turned out really amazing and memorable.

Hi Gabriela, What a great look at your time in Vienna. It is nice to remember that when things don't turn out like we thought that there is something we can see or do that is different than we had planned. Lovely fog and friends and cozy nights together and those great views from the Aquarium. Thanks for sharing.

Hey hey! Indeed. In fact, I believe that everything happens for a reason, even when we don't see the reason right away!
Thank you for the lovely comment and I hope you have a beautiful week ❤️
