Let's travel together #347 - Isola della Pescheria and Canale dei Buranelli (Treviso, Italy)

From the little amount of time we managed to spend in Treviso, on the last day of our city break we decided to enjoy a walk without too many plans or a proper direction.
That's how, we ended up exploring some less known points of interests you get if you search on Google for an itinerary, which, was very welcomed since we enjoy this kind of places more than the popular ones.
Back in that day we had easily 20-30 stops, from museums to churches, from parks to all kinds of paths created by the water surrounding this part of Italy, being just a few kilometers away from Venice.
But still in the same day, we ended up to what, perhaps, might seem like a common thing for the locals, without too much interest into seeing those places other than going for shopping.
While I've never been and never will be a fan of fish or other foods that include anything that grows in the water because I never could deal with the specific smell, we were pleased to make our way through Isola della Pescheria (meaning Fishermen's Island) and it hosts the city fish market.
Even if we were lucky enough to find no sellers here and be able to admire the view without being bothered in any way, the smell could still be felt. However, if this one was missing, we couldn't feel the authenticity of the place.

The fish marked is placed along a little canal that makes the place even more beautiful, but interesting as well, based on the little mermaid statue that you can spot in the first picture from above.
"Statua della Sirenetta" (Mermaid Statue) is a relatively modern public artwork that carries symbolic and cultural meanings in Treviso, but it's not as widely known or historically significant as other landmarks in Italy. Anyway, being a city that is mostly surrounded by water, I couldn't find a better place where this statue to be placed, honestly.
And if water, the mermaid statue and the fish market weren't enough, keep in mind that once you cross the market you will end up in a little park that is fully surrounded by water, and it's absolutely stunning,g especially during the Autumn season when there is so much color all around.

If all of that wasn't too convincing already, if you keep walking along the river line, you will soon walk into a one-of-a-kind neighbourhood that at first might not seem the most eye-catching, but the water mill surely brings a unique touch that you won't see out there too often.
Plus, it's one of the quietest places I've walked through, away from traffic noise or too many tourists, but plenty of cats on the windows and on the streets!

As soon as we took our vitamin Nature, we made it closer to what the center of the city looks like, leaving behind nature and water and replacing them with great architecture and interesting buildings.
Still then, we spotted this pillar that didn't look like the others, remembering about those who lost their lives during the fights from Africa. I've seen commemorative monuments before, both in my country but outside of it too, and these were usually entire cemeteries organized or large statues stating the commemoration. However, in Treviso was the first time when I spotted this kind of activities done a lot more minimalist, with plates being implemented in the structure of various buildings, not catching much attention but still stirring lots of curiosity and admiration once noticed.

We didn't get to experience the urban vibe too much as we ended up close to the water again, but this time to a place that was actually represented by a name, which is Canale dei Buranelli.
This one is very similar to what you usually see in Venice, but somehow a lot more calm, less crowded and mixed up with nature.
Although I would love to start my mornings drinking a coffee on one of the balconies that are just 10-20cm away from the water level, I still think about how hard it is to actually live in those houses and not be constantly worried by the water level. The global warming is more serious than ever, and I think we can all agree that nothing is safe or predictable anymore, sadly.

There were more bridges crossing the canal, but the one we ended up spending time on seemed to offer the best view. On one side, you could enjoy a really majestic view with lots of green scenery and seemingly a more calm lifestyle, while on the opposite direction, you could feel the urban vibe a lot more present. Somehow, that tiny bridge did a great job placing us in between two worlds that,t even if they seem like being apart, they are one and the same.
And just like stories exist in any place on this world, there is also one over Canale dei Buranelli that says that all those bridges you can see in the images including the one I used for taking pictures, were once used by the women who were washing their clothes in this canal, yet a very beautiful image of history.

While the 21st century doesn't include this activity in most parts of the globe, the bridges still share stories these days, which in most cases are about love and connection between people, based on all the names written along the way and the padlocks that you can spot here and there. This activity became more and more active, and I'd lie by saying it doesn't bring a smile to my face!
Isola della Pescheria and Canale dei Buranelli are located quite close to each other and in order to reach them either by walking as Treviso is quite a small town and you can reach everything quite quick, or by bus. The nearest bus stop is Piazza San Leonardo, and it's just a 2 minute walk. Bus lines 1, 7, 3, 10, 4, 55, 6, 9, 11, and 21 serve this area.
Other places I've seen during my stay in Treviso:
- Porta San Tomaso and Ponte delle Università
- Fontana Delle Tette (Galleria della Strada Romana)
- Streets of Treviso
- Sacred Beauty: Exploring the Historic Churches of Treviso, Italy
- Palazzo dei Trecento (Treviso, Italy)
- The Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle
- Isola della Pescheria and Canale dei Buranelli

That final bridge scene with two different views? That’s poetic! Nature on one side and the city on the other, it’s like a perfect metaphor for balance in life.
Indeed!! Loved that place ❤️
Italy has some beautiful and amazing places to visit to, that photos also looked good. The architectures and the cleanliness of that place is so nice to see🤍
I fully agree with you there 💯
The canal bridge catched the attraction and so much beautiful places you present us the autumn vibes trees is mirroring to the water and so much gives the place more nice. Their place is beautiful.
I still feel sad dedicating just one day to explore Treviso during our stay. We should return there sometime.
I've never been to the canal area before, and looking at your photos makes me feel like I should definitely go there once. Amazing clicks.
Fully recommend it
I love how you found beauty in the quieter, less touristy spots—it shows a genuine appreciation for the soul of the city.
That's my go-to every time I travel. It's so beautiful!
