Greetings, welcome to my next travel experience on Cyprus!

Every year in May, the peaceful mountain village of Agros on the island of Cyprus transforms into a vibrant and fragrant celebration – the Annual Rose Festival, held during the rose harvest season.

For the residents of Agros and the neighboring villages, it’s one of the most anticipated events of the year. And for visitors from around the world, it's a truly memorable experience.

From the moment you arrive, there’s a sense of festivity in the air. The village streets are full of life, decorated with flowers and local crafts, and the sweet scent of freshly harvested roses lingers everywhere.

Dozens of stands line the streets, offering samples of local rose-based products – from rose water and jams to natural cosmetics and handmade soaps. And yes, you’re welcome to taste, smell, and buy anything that catches your attention.

One of the most special parts of the festival – and a true highlight – is the chance to join the early morning rose harvest. At 6:30 a.m., before the sun rises too high, locals and visitors gather in the rose fields. Roses must be picked in the cool hours of the morning, as this is when their fragrance is at its peak. As the sun gets stronger, the petals begin to open fully, and the delicate aroma starts to fade. I had the chance to help with the harvest myself and proudly collected two bags full of fresh rose petals – an unforgettable and grounding experience.

Beyond the harvest and the markets, the festival is also a cultural celebration. Traditional music and live performances fill the village square, with dancers from regional dance schools – including children – performing authentic Cypriot folk dances in colorful costumes. The energy is contagious, and it feels as though the whole village is dancing.

What struck me most this year was the international spirit of the event. I met people from Spain, Israel, Russia, Germany, and the UK, along with many Cypriots who travel from across the island just to be here for the weekend. It’s a true gathering of cultures, united by a shared love for tradition, community, and of course – roses.

Another highlight was the guided tour of the local rose factory, where we learned about the village’s rich history in rose cultivation and how modern technology is now blending with traditional methods. I’ll be sharing more about this visit in an upcoming article – it deserves a story of its own.

For now, I’m sharing some first impressions and photos from this year’s Rose Festival. It’s a celebration that blends nature, heritage, and human connection – and once you’ve experienced it, it’s easy to see why people return year after year.

Greetings
