For the past year, I’ve been working in the construction industry. Not in traditional construction, though, but in sustainable building.
For those who aren’t familiar with the term, in a nutshell, sustainable building uses materials that are more environmentally friendly than those used in traditional construction: clay, wood, stone, straw, etc.
It was physically demanding. Luckily, I enjoy physical activity and was able to apply what I’d learnt in my strength training to my work, and vice versa.
I made new friends and strengthened existing friendships.
We were in some beautiful areas far from cities and large towns.
I learnt how to use the tools and techniques of the trade. That’s one of the things I value most about the experience. I’d been looking for this for a while; I needed it to carry out repairs at home, and it also gave me the personal confidence to tackle and resolve life’s challenges.
With this work group, we built houses using wooden frames and thatch. If you’d like, I’ll tell you a bit more about what that involves another day.
I also came across some downsides: Just because certain materials are used doesn’t automatically make a project sustainable or eco-friendly. Just because it’s ‘green building’ doesn’t guarantee there’s no labour exploitation or physical risks. But this ‘flip side’ is a topic for another post.

El último año trabajé en la construcción. Pero no en la construcción tradicional, sino en bioconstrucción.
Para quienes desconocen y resumidamente, la bioconstrucción se realiza con materiales más amigables con el medioambiente que la construcción tradicional: arcilla, madera, piedra, paja, etc.
Fue un desgaste físico fuerte. Por suerte la actividad física me gusta y pude aplicar lo aprendido en los entrenamientos de fuerza en el trabajo y viceversa.
Hice amigos nuevos y consolidé amistades.
Estuvimos en zonas bellísimas alejadas de ciudades y grandes pueblos.
Aprendí a manejar herramientas y técnicas del oficio. Eso es una de las cosas que más aprecio de la experiencia. Lo buscaba hace tiempo, lo necesitaba para poder realizar reparaciones en mi hogar y también me aportó seguridad personal para afrontar y resolver cuestiones de la vida.
Con este grupo de trabajo hicimos casas con bastidores de madera y quincha. Si gustan otro día les cuento un poco en que consiste.
También encontré aspectos negativos: No por utilizar materiales determinados es netamente sustentable o ecológico. No por tratarse de bioconstrucción es seguro que no haya explotación laboral ni riesgos para el cuerpo. Pero este "lado B" da para explayarse en otro post.

What a view from the worksite!
Do you do electrical and plumbing too?
As an owner of my own home I did fix my garage roof as a project that took me and my sons the better part of a week rather than a two days by tradesman but that saved me sever hundreds in cash. My back was smarting for a few days. That was hard work. I admire girls that can tackle a home repair head on. I encouraged the #LOH community learn how to fix something in their homes in a past writing contest.

I did an electrical course a while ago and it came in handy for a few things at work. The practical bit was really useful. Now I’m feeling confident enough to have a go at a few things at home. I don’t know much about plumbing, but I’m keen to sort out any problems that crop up in my house.
It’s great that you’ve sorted out the garage ceiling like that. You spend less money and gain knowledge and experience. It’s perfect.
I've replaced worn out outlets and light switches. Replaced a kitchen sink, replace washers and a whole toilet. It wasn't as hard as I thought. Once I had to solder a new tap valve onto copper pipe and it's still holding well with no leak.
I found most gals dread electrical work.
Solution; Turn off the relevant Breaker switch. Simple.
