Walking the Kalmthoutse Heide in Purple Bloom

Last weekend we were camping near the Belgian border and decided to make a walk on the Kalmthoutse Heide. We chose this place since the heather is in bloom at the end of August and in September. This beautiful purple plants give the place a lovely color.

The Kalmthoutse Heide is one of the oldest and largest nature reserves in Flanders. It actually stretches out over the border between Belgium and the Netherlands. It is part of the "Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide" and covers more than 6,000 hectares. The area exixts of of heathland, forests, sand and dunes.

Just enjoy the shots I made there!

It must be one of the best seasons to visit that place and be able to admire the beauty of the entire landscape with its tones, its trees and the infinity of the horizon.

I quite like all seasons, but this is the most colorful one. Although autumn colors can also be nice!

The purple heather on the ground looks stunning and it was full of colors the place that makes it so nice to walk around the area.

Those pics remind me a lot of the Lüneburger Heide, which is kind-of-close, in Lower Saxony/Niedersachsen. We went there several times for biology excursions while I was studying close by, in Lüneburg. Thanks for bringing back those memories, hadn't thought about those times quite a while!

Do you know if the Kalmthoutse Heide is maintained as well by sheep and such? Or do they use a different technique?

Nice! You're welcome!
I've never been to Lüneberg myself. Yes, the Kalmthoutse Heide is maintained by sheep as well. The same goes for the Posbank in the Netherlands. We had a mobile home near the Posbank for a couple of years.
