The medieval center of Billom, France.
On our holidays we always like to visit cities and towns. We're especially looking for places that still have that authenticity. Billom is one of those towns. It is a small town located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in France.
The town has a nice historic center with narrow cobble stone streets.
Here is an impression of our visit.
The houses in the center date from the 13th - 16th century. Many are made with timber framing and plaster, like the ones below.
The building on the right is a boucherie, which is a butchers house. Here they used to sell the meat on the street.
Some of these historic buildings have upper floors that are jutting out over the street.
Here is one of the narrow coblle stone streets that goes around the church.
The church itself, the Église Saint‑Cerneuf, wasn't that impressive. Though I must say that I have seen any churches and cathedrals, so I'm a bit spoiled. But it just wasn't too well maintained. There were signs of leakage and some windows were broken.
The church was built at the end of the 11th or early 12th century. Its Romanesque crypt survives beneath the church.
The inside of the church was a bit gloomy. It did have a lot of old fashioned church chairs and some really big paintings.
I did like the chapel with a nice stained glass window.
Somewhere further on in the village was a bell tower.
Below I'm sharing some more pictures to give you an impression of the medieval center of Billom.
I hope you liked my little tour through the historic city center of Billom.

Nice! Those timber framing details look amazing. Perfect for a scenic ride. 🐴🇫🇷
I absolutely love such old locations, especially on darker, more gloomy rainy days where the atmosphere really comes out. Especially if there's some cobblestone with the rain flowing through.
Are they mostly just homes or businesses now?
Neat architecture !PIMP
