I really like macro photography. It shows a world we normally can't see and small details suddenly become clear. Especially when shooting insects, macro shots show tiny hairs, wing patterns and curly tongues.
That is when you have the right equipment and you have a lot of patience. Because my experience with macro photography is that you have lot of shots that don't have the focus on the right spot. This is because a lot of insects just don't sit still, but also the plants they are on are moving because of the wind.

This afternoon I took over hundred shots of insects in my backyard and I only have a hand full of them that I really like. I'll show them in this blog.

At fist I noticed this yellow/brown dragonfly. Normally I spot these insects near water and I don't have any water at all in my backyard, so I was surprised to see one. I really like the compound eyes of dragonflies. These are made of thousands of tiny lenses. Unfortunately I don't have the equipment to show them with even more details.

One of the disadvantages of macro lenses us that you cannot get the entire insect in the shot. That is why I took a separate show of its tail. It made me think a bit of a bamboo fishing rod 😀

I thought this shot looked cool too. The dragonfly was sitting on one of the withered flowers of my great Oxeye plant. Although the flowers nornally are bright yellow and attract insects, this withered one still attracted this dragonfly. I thought it was funny to have another withered flower in the background.

And although they are not doing very well at the moment, I did spot a butterfly in my backyard again. I did plant a lot of flowering plants to attract them, but the numbers of butterflies have been declining in the past years. So I'm really happy when I see one.

The species is a peacock butterfly. The inside of the wings has beautiful orange and black colors. The outside of its wings exists mostly of camouflage colors black and brown. It has something from a dried out leaf.

The butterfly was attracted by my purple butterfly bush. It used its curly tongue to get inside of the flowers.
