A walk in the forest on thursday for my #wednesdaywalk

Yes it is Thursday already, but @tattoodjay also is OK with #wednesdaywalks on other days as well, so I still post mine today.

This week, we're spending a few days with the family in our static caravan. The children have a two-week school holiday, so we've also taken a few days off so we can get away for a bit. I've mentioned it before in some of my posts, but we have an old static caravan on a campsite where we go to several times a year. Because the weather forecast for this week was very good, we're spending a few days here now too.

The campsite is located on the edge of a large nature reserve. And the caravan is in the back part of the campsite, which is already halfway into the forest. As soon as we walk off the campsite, we're right in the woods.

It's really wonderfully peaceful here. Especially since we live in the most densely populated part of the Netherlands, a few days back to nature is truly delightful.
Along the edges of the woods there are some fields. As you can see the weather was really nice. A bit too warm for me actually with 26 degrees Celcius. With almost no clouds in the sky it was quite warm in the open field.

That's why I took a turn right and walked straigth into the forest.

The forest is densely wooded. There are many coniferous trees such as spruces and pines, but also plenty of beeches and oaks. It's very diverse.

You can really feel what trees do for the environment since it was way cooler in the forest. The leaves block a lot of sun and the fallen leaves keep the moist in the forest floor. The path was even still muddy on some places from the rain of a couple of days ago.

The trails are quite narrow in some places and the foresters leave fallen trees where they are since they are valuable for the forest providing a source of food for many insects.
But that makes the walk a bit more difficult sometimes as the path was blocked on some places. But I'm flexible enough to hop over them.

I also noticed a lot of tiny caterpillars hanging from the trees. These caterpilars are hanging on very thin threads. Unfortunately I wasn't able to determine the species with my Obsidentiyfy app on my phone, but it's probably some type of moth.

Somewhere during my walk there was an open spot in the forest. I assume there must have been a fire in this spot, but the strange part is that it's an area of 'just' one football field. The area is already filled with tiny spruces, so new big trees are on their way again.

Along the path there are also a lot of ferns. I really like the leaf pattern of these plants. And they are also a nice colour green.

The nice thing about this forest is that it's quite far away from any villages, so there aren't many hikers around. I only spotted a couple during my walk. There also aren't any big roads in the neighborhood, so the only sounds you hear are the wind and the birds.
I've heard a lot of woodpeckers, but I wasn't able to spot a single one of then. The forest is too dense for that. And apart from a lot of singing birds I also noticed a Cuckoo in the distance. It's call is unmistakably recognizable. But also he (or she) didn't show up.

It was a nice walk of approximately five kilometers. I hope you enjoyed it too by reading this blog.
