Clash of Feathers – A Chicken Fight By the Roadside

These photos are my entry for the #monomad contest by @brumest and @monochromes

Today, on my way to the river, I stumbled upon a heated scene—two roosters locked in combat, feathers flying and talons flashing. Their movement was sharp, almost theatrical, a whirlwind of dust and determination. The fight was primal, yet mesmerizing, a reminder of nature’s raw instincts.

My grandmother once told me a tale about chicken fights. According to her, in the days of old, roosters weren’t just birds—they were warriors. Villagers believed each rooster carried the spirit of a guardian, protecting its owner from misfortune. A victorious rooster was seen as a sign of strength and prosperity for its household.

Historically, chicken fighting, or cockfighting, dates back thousands of years, finding its roots in ancient Greece, Rome, and even Asia. It was more than entertainment; it symbolized courage and survival.

As I watched, i had no choice to make videos and take pictures , while snapping I couldn’t help but think: were these roosters fighting for territory, pride, or some timeless, inherited instinct passed down through the generations?
