Perhaps that’s what it is

Last night, I dreamt of the house where I grew up. A small home with a big yard on the outskirts of a city that has since expanded far beyond what I once knew. That house no longer exists, in its place now stands a block of flats. Yet, strangely, I often catch myself thinking it’s still there. When I search for some forgotten item from childhood, a book, a toy, a keepsake, my mind insists it must still be waiting in a cupboard or closet that disappeared long ago.

But I keep it alive in my mind.

The roses with their rich aroma in the front yard (so hard to find such fragrant roses nowadays), the beds of spearmint and other herbs along the side, the lemon trees that gave fruit all year, the tangerine trees with their juicy sweetness, the loquats I planted myself as a child and watched grow alongside me, and of course the apricot tree with the most delicious apricots I have ever eaten.

They all returned to me last night. In the dream I was walking through the garden, and everything looked intact, just as it did decades ago. I don’t clearly remember what happened, there was some kind of story, but it dissolved when I woke. What remained was the feeling, a quiet reassurance, a sense of safety and belonging. That space was built to protect and nourish me, and even though it’s gone, the memory still shelters me somehow.

Dreams have a way of bending time. For a few minutes after waking, I wasn’t sure if the house was truly gone or if I could still ride my bike down that yard and push open the familiar wooden door. It’s strange how strongly a place can live inside us, even when reality has erased it. Perhaps that’s what nostalgia really is, not just missing the past, but carrying its rooms and scents and seasons with you, wherever you go.

The photos I’m sharing today, though, have nothing to do with the dream. They were taken in a completely different moment, if you’ve seen my two previous posts, here and here, you already know the context. But somehow they feel right to accompany these thoughts. They are quiet pictures, with the same kind of stillness that memories hold.

And they are also my entry for the #monomad challenge.

The camera that I used is a Canon EOS 6D mark II with an EF 50mm f1.8 and an EF 100mm f2.8/L macro lens attached. I edited the photographs in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic.

All the pictures and the words are mine.

How sweet the kitten's gaze is. These are very beautiful images, and just as you describe them: full of quietness, and I would add that they are also full of peace.

It is human nature to long for the home where we grew up, as it was the place of our first experiences. Although I would not want to live in the house where I grew up again, it always appears in my dreams or nightmares.

The important thing in this story is to be clear that this belongs to the past, and we should not dwell on it.

Have a nice day.🌞

You are right, the home where we grew up will always have a special place in our hearts. It is very clear to me that it belongs to the past and I wouldn't want it to be otherwise. I moved out shortly after my 18th birthday and never looked back about my decision.

But it was kind of nice to know that it was still there :)

Thank you for stopping by!

You have traveled through dreams to the past and to a safe place where you grew up and the flowers had an exquisite aroma and where you could walk in your garden. Dreams are journeys, which is why they feel so real that when you wake up, you cannot distinguish or understand what has happened.

The photographs you chose to accompany this experience are ideal: the gaze of that cat that transports us, the streetlights, the trees, and above all those dew-covered flowers that allude to the nostalgia you speak of. It was wonderful to read your words and see these magnificent photographs, which, being in black and white, transport us to that past. Thank you very much!

Beautiful post. And yes, dreams are a guide. It’s important to try to remember them and, in some way, draw from them the message we might deeply need in the present moment of our lives in order to move forward.

Yes, I know they are there to guide us but I find it difficult to figure them out. Sometimes I know that something bad is about to happen but never fully understand them.

Thanks :)

Don’t dwell on negative thoughts… answers simply arrive. I don’t think we need to search for them so actively. Just remember—and the answers to your questions about that will reveal themselves at the right moment. They say nothing and no one arrives late, and nothing and no one leaves early. Everything happens in perfect time.

Beautiful photos and a very interesting story. All in all, I don't know what captivated me more. Dreams have power. I am often motivated by dreams that remind me of old classes and encourage me to act again. Have a nice day!

It’s strange how even if we didn’t live those moments ourselves, memories like yours make us imagine them so clearly. It’s beautiful how you keep that place alive through your words and photos.
