Never in August

_MG_2988.jpg

The fifteenth of August is the pick of the summer in Greece. It is the day with the most festivities, fairs and summer events. The days around the 15th, almost all companies and stores are closed and the big cities look (and are) deserted!

The next day (today that is) we start wishing each other:

have a good winter

and the common feeling is that the summer is over!

I totally disagree with that. Actually I believe that the best part of summer lies ahead. I was never fond of August anyway, I rather dislike the overcrowded country and the frenzy attitude of the townies bringing their urban madness in every rural place they can find.

August is the month that I used to travel abroad, when I had the time and the means to do so, but that hasn't happen for a long time. So now I just find a cozy spot, keep a low profile and patiently wait for the vacationers to go home and let the rest of us enjoy the calmness of the countryside :)

The pictures of this post are taken in the July of another year, a year that I was travelling much more but I could hardly realise what I was visiting!

The location is Naxos, one relatively big, Greek island at the Aegean sea, that has a lot to offer, both to the visitors, as well as the inhabitants.

Just one piece of advise. No matter how wonderful a place looks, no matter how many breathtaking pictures you have seen or how many enthusiastic reviews you have read,

NEVER VISIT GREECE IN AUGUST!

As it happens often, I don't have a more recent walk to share, so I traveled through my archive to the time that I was a photographer for a travel magazine and remembered that summer walk for my #wednesdaywalk post, a great challenge, hosted by @tattoodjay!

Happy Wednesday, happy walks, to all of you :)

Your photos are sublime! I think it has been too long since I savoured one of your posts and the exquisite photos - and too long since I told you how wonderful they are. They take one's mind on a wonderful adventure travelling to beautiful destinations that few can ever go. Those doors beg to be opened. The petals enticingly asking to be smelled. The ocean - ah that colour of the ocean - what more can one do except hurl oneself into it, despite it being nearly the end of summer. Never mind. Here it is nearly the end of winter. I will pretend I am basking in beautiful Greek sunshine while the shades of aqua blue shimmer around my toes

Thank you very much :)

I guess that high season is just for the ones that don't have an alternative, otherwise I don't see why anyone would choose it!

Why? I mean why not August?

Unlike Greece, it is the peak of the rainy season over here. I have heard so many wonderful things about Greece and would love the opportunity to visit someday.

I said not in August because it is too overcrowded.

I hope you'll have the chance to visit Greece one day, it really has many beautiful places :)

I definitely prefer pre or post summer - everything else is too frantic and busy! The idea of finding a cozy spot and relishing the peace and quiet resonates with me a lot!

I am sure you of all people, can understand what I am talking about! And although avoiding the madness of August can be hard, fortunately it is still doable :)

I can't even imagine what we'll be doing in August next year! We won't be in Greece, that's for sure - but maybe September if our money holds out!

i must say i enjoyed Corfu in September. Exactly right amount of people and heat.

as hive fest look harder and harder this year, i am thinking Greece in second part of September does not sound bad.

Yes, September is a good month for Greece and the second part even better! The only small disadvantage that I see, is that the days are getting shorter but that's not much of a problem :)

as an unofficial top expert of Greece sea towns, what would you say, east or west side of the "mainland" (no islands). I only been in Platamon and Corfu.

For some reason the west side is not that popular here in Serbia (most go to the "fingers" or paralia, olympia or islands). But the west looks interesting too.

I wouldn't call myself an expert, especially not a top one :)

And the north part of Greece is an area that I don't visit often but I am glad to tell you what I know!

The "fingers" of Chalkidiki is the obvious choice. Closer to the Balkans, with many wonderful beaches and an abundance of amenities. The place is full of hotels, restaurants, coffee shops and everything a vacationist might want. Did I mentioned the beaches? They are a lot, organised or not and a few of them, are among the most beautiful in Greece. The prices might be a little higher than the Ionian (the west) coast but at the end of September, they should be reasonable. Let me tell you that I have only been to Chalkidiki once, ten years ago and I was working like crazy, so my memories are a bit blurry.

The West side, on the other hand has less beaches to choose from and less tourism infrastructure but I like it because it is more unspoiled. If you choose a place like Parga to stay, you can have all the amenities you want and a couple of beaches in walking distance if you want to just relax but also many opportunities for day trips to see the area around. Again, I have only been 2-3 times in this area, many years ago so I am not the most reliable source of information :)

I hope I helped a bit!

thanks.

had no idea that West side was not that developed in tourism infrastructure. i was just looking at the shores, and yes it does look like there is not that much.

Parga looks like a nice town

Very beautiful view of the old building, it still looks sturdy with natural stone arrangement. Thank you.
