Higher heart rate than planned... my training diary entry from April 14 2026

(The owner of my first accommodation near Udon Thani (Thailand) was feeding this baby bird when I arrived. It had fallen out of its nest and was no longer being accepted by its mother. Sadly, the poor thing didn't make it. It was probably simply too young to survive without its mother.)

Hi Actifitters,

actually, yesterday I had planned to pedal at low heart rate levels so as not to interrupt my regeneration but still to keep my legs moving and burn a few calories.

For some reason, that wasn't possible. At least not at my usual pace. I rode for about 48 minutes at what felt like a moderate intensity, but I couldn't keep my average heart rate below 133 beats per minute. My maximum heart rate was even 155 beats per minute.

Unless my chest strap is broken, it must be something to do with me. That would mean that something in my body isn't quite back to normal yet.

I'll keep at it and monitor the situation.

Even though my Garmin watch recommends a rest day for me today, I'll still do a little exercise. After all, I've declared war on those holiday pounds.

I will probably cycle for another hour or so, if only because I want to know how my heart rate behaves.

Those are normal heart rates for me during exercise... even when not that hard. In the intense phase, I made it to 170 bpm today.

Took me 2 min of slow cycling and controlled breathing to get it back to 135. But I don't have a chest strap. Still hoping my brother will bring me one :-D

You mentioned that you live at a higher altitude and that's why your pulse is generally a bit higher. At what altitude do you live?

Around 2000m and yes. The system should be adapting to it, but there's always a certain part that just can't adapt fully and pretend it's 0.
