(Here you see one out of three summit crosses on the Hörnle mountain. Later this year we want to come back to finish all three summits.)

Hi Actifitters,

yesterday was finally the day – our first winter hike was on the agenda. Our destination was the Hörnlehütte, located at approximately 1400 meters above sea level in the Ammergau Alps, more precisely in Bad Kohlgrub. So, my wife, a friend, and I set off, driving for about 1.5 hours. The parking lot was at about 900 meters above sea level. That meant we had to climb about 500 meters in altitude between the hut and us. We trudged off.

It became clear on the very first forest road that it was going to be slippery! The problem was, my friend didn't have ice cleats. For those who haven't heard of them, ice cleats are like snow chains for your shoes, providing excellent grip on ice and snow. Since I'm currently the fittest of the three of us, I lent my cleats to my friend and decided to take on the slippery adventure.

It wasn't nearly as bad as I had feared. I slipped a few times, but never fell. There were also sections that were completely free of snow and ice.

However, I was mostly venturing off the marked trails, across snow-covered meadows. I would have been lost on the actual paths without ice cleats.

After about an hour and 45 minutes, we arrived at the hut and treated ourselves to a plate of pasta and a non-alcoholic beer. About 30 minutes later, we started back down towards the valley.

For the descent, I decided to take a different route for part of the way than my companions. I wanted to save some time, but it didn't quite work out. Instead, I suddenly found myself on a rather slippery slope.

Here, I had to move very carefully at an angle, using the sunken footprints of others to avoid sliding down the slope. I think this section is also responsible for the slight muscle soreness in my thighs.

Anyway, after almost 3.5 hours, we arrived back at the parking lot safe and sound. The first hike was a success, the weather was fantastic, and the tour even offered a little bit of adventure. What more could you ask for?

Here are a few more details about the tour:

Duration - 3:23:57
Distance - 8,07 km
Average pace - 19:35 / km
Step count - 12034
Total elevation gain - 586 m
Total descent - 562 m
Min altitude - 907 m
Max altitude - 1409 m

Whether and how much exercise I do today, I'll decide spontaneously over the next few hours. But I'm pretty sure I won't be slacking off.

If you are wondering why I have only 12500 steps tracked, Actifit did not count my steps the whole way up to the hut.

The 500 meter climb, walking in the snow and ice was a real adventure. Being able to finish safely on the ice without cleats is impressive. All the pictures are beautiful. And thank you for winning again.
