Base training on the bike and a lot of sweat and push-ups... my training diary entry from January 16 2026

Hi Actifitters,

hope you're all doing well.

Yesterday, my next base training session was on the agenda. I pedaled for one hour and 18 minutes at 120 watts. Ideally, during base training, you ride at an intensity that allows you to still hold a conversation. Garmin (and I believe other providers as well) refers to this as training in Zone 2.

Funnily enough, two minutes after I started the session, a friend called me. He was driving and it took him one hour and 15 minutes to reach his destination. We thought that couldn't be a coincidence and talked for the entire session. It actually went quite well. Towards the end of the session, though, I did start to get a little out of breath.

Overall, the training felt good. Since there aren't any spectacular stats, I'll skip listing them today.

Before the bike ride, I continued working on my push-ups. It actually went quite well. I even made some slight progress with close-grip push-ups. Since I did quite a few of those, I couldn't manage quite as many regular push-ups afterward. All in all, though, I was satisfied with my performance and had no pain in my elbows or shoulder.
Once I resume my push-up training as I did before my break, I'll share more details.

After my bike ride, I spontaneously decided to do a bit more training. Since I wasn't really sure what else I could do, I thought I'd try something new. I started with push-ups and then did a few minutes on the step board at a jogging pace. Then I did push-ups again, followed by a few more minutes on the step board. I kept alternating between these two exercises until I'd completed 40 minutes. Because I hardly took any breaks, my heart rate peaked at 172 beats per minute, and I felt like I lost a liter of sweat.

That should be it for yesterday.

As mentioned yesterday, I'll be skipping my bike ride today and instead going for a hike in the snow with my wife and a friend. Since it's the first hike of the year, we'll take it easy. The plan is to climb 500 meters to a mountain hut where we can have lunch. I'm curious to see what the weather will be like and whether we can even make it there in regular hiking boots. Apparently, there's quite a bit of snow. More on that tomorrow.

Being able to talk the entire time on the Zone 2 ride meant the intensity was just right. The push-up progress and spontaneous workout were also quite impressive. It was also good to hear about the hiking plan in the snow, looking forward to the next update. And thanks again!

Thanks man... we arrived back down the mountain safe. Sadly there was not that much snow that I expected but the tour was very nice.
