Grey Heron on top of a tree

Grey herons are one of the most common herons here in Austria and I encounter them very often. But since there are spots where they were hunted in the past some of them are pretty shy and it might be difficult to get close to them. On other spots where they didn't have to fear us humans it is easier to get very close to them one of these Spots is in Vienna where I was able to get these pictures here. The Heron Island in the Floridsdorfer Waterpark is one of these spots. This is also a great spot to encounter the european water turtle.

On our usual Vienna trips this park is one of our must see spots and there is also a restaurant nearby with good food as well. The waterpark provides some good food for these birds as well since ther are probably a lot of fish and other animals there for these grey herons otherwise they wouldn't have chosen this spot as their breeding ground.
