A stroll along El Cardón Beach and the traces of erosion on Margarita Island [ENG-ESP]

Yesterday, after taking my daughter to her catechism class and attending Mass together, I decided to treat myself to a short walk around an area of the island that connects to where we live. It's Playa El Cardón, here on Margarita Island. Although it's not far from where I live, I don't visit it very often because I usually prefer beaches that are closer to home. It's not my favorite, but it has always appealed to me because of its peaceful and natural atmosphere.

When I arrived, I was struck by something that made me think. The beach has been changing little by little, and the process of erosion is becoming increasingly evident. I immediately remembered a news article I had read recently about how erosion is affecting several beaches on Margarita Island. What I saw in El Cardón confirmed those words: the sand is receding, the shore is shrinking, and in some places the road seems to be just a step away from the sea. It is incredible and at the same time worrying.

I also read that, according to studies and inspections carried out by the environmental agency, this phenomenon corresponds to a natural and extraordinary oceanographic event. It is characterized by a rise in sea level and an increase in wave energy. In other words, nature itself is reshaping the coastal landscape. And although in this case I don't know if it is a direct human intervention, the impact is real and reminds us how fragile our natural spaces are.

As I walked along the sand, I noticed that in certain places there was hardly any space left to lay out a towel or simply sit and gaze at the horizon. The sea seemed to be reclaiming what used to be beach, and the coastline looked increasingly narrow. In the photos I took, you can clearly see that the road is so close that you feel that, with a few stronger waves, the water could reach it.

This walk made me reflect on the importance of valuing and caring for our beaches. And although in some cases erosion is a natural process, it is also true that human action can accelerate or aggravate these changes. Unplanned construction, pollution, and the excessive use of coastal resources are factors that, added to natural phenomena, threaten the beauty and stability of places like El Cardón Beach.

I can't say that Playa El Cardón is one of my favorite places, but yesterday it taught me something: even the places we rarely visit have something to show us and remind us of. The island is a living organism, constantly changing, and we are witnesses to those changes. Perhaps the next time I pass through this place, I will find a different landscape, perhaps more eroded or perhaps with new shapes that the sea has drawn in the sand.

The truth is that this walk left me with a mixture of awe and concern. Awe at the force of nature, capable of changing what we believe to be stable; concern because these transformations affect us all, directly or indirectly. El Cardón Beach is a reflection of what is happening on many other coasts of Margarita; it is a reminder that we must be attentive, informed, and committed to preserving our environment. Ayer, después de llevar a mi hija a su clase de catecismo y asistir juntas a la misa, decidí regalarme un pequeño paseo por una zona de la isla que conecta con nuestro lugar de residencia. Se trata de Playa El Cardón, aquí en la Isla de Margarita, es un sitio que aunque no me queda lejos, no lo visito con frecuencia porque normalmente voy a las playas que están más cerca de mi casa. No es mi favorita, pero siempre me ha llamado la atención por su ambiente tranquilo y natural.

Al llegar, me encontré con una imágen que me dejó pensativa, la playa ha ido cambiando poco a poco y el proceso de erosión es cada vez más evidente. Recordé inmediatamente una noticia que había leído hace poco sobre cómo la erosión está afectando a varias playas de la isla de Margarita. Lo que vi en El Cardón fue la confirmación de esas palabras, la arena retrocede, la orilla se reduce y en algunos tramos la carretera parece estar a un paso del mar. Es increíble y al mismo tiempo preocupante.

También leí que según estudios e inspecciones realizadas por el ente ambiental, este fenómeno corresponde a un evento oceanográfico natural y extraordinario. Se caracteriza por la elevación del nivel del mar y un incremento en la energía del oleaje. En otras palabras, la naturaleza misma está reconfigurando el paisaje costero. Y aunque en este caso no se si se trata de una intervención humana directa, el impacto es real y nos recuerda lo frágiles que son nuestros espacios naturales.

Mientras caminaba por la arena, observaba cómo en ciertos lugares casi no quedaba espacio para extender una toalla o simplemente sentarse a contemplar el horizonte. El mar parecía reclamar lo que antes era playa y la línea costera se veía cada vez más estrecha. En las fotos que tomé se aprecia claramente la carretera está tan cerca que uno siente que, con unas cuantas olas más fuertes, el agua podría alcanzarla.

Este paseo me hizo reflexionar sobre la importancia de valorar y cuidar nuestras playas. Y Aunque en algunos casos erosión responde a procesos naturales, también es cierto que la acción humana puede acelerar o agravar estos cambios. La construcción sin planificación, la contaminación y el uso desmedido de los recursos costeros son factores que sumados a los fenómenos naturales, ponen en riesgo la belleza y la estabilidad de lugares como Playa El Cardón.

No puedo decir que Playa El Cardón sea de mis lugares favoritos, pero ayer me regaló una enseñanza, incluso los espacios que visitamos poco tienen algo que mostrarnos y recordarnos. La isla es un organismo vivo, en constante transformación y nosotros somos testigos de esos cambios. Quizás la próxima vez que vuelva a pasar por este lugar, encuentre un paisaje distinto, tal vez más erosionado o quizá con nuevas formas que el mar haya dibujado en la arena.

Lo cierto es que este paseo me dejó una mezcla de asombro y preocupación. Asombro por la fuerza de la naturaleza, capaz de modificar lo que creemos estable; preocupación porque estas transformaciones nos afectan a todos, directa o indirectamente. Playa El Cardón es un reflejo de lo que ocurre en muchas otras costas de Margarita, es un recordatorio de que debemos estar atentos, informados y comprometidos con la preservación de nuestro entorno.
