Winter Solstice, Snowshoe Hike, Sub Zero Temps, Trailer - Wednesday
Yesterday morning the sun finally came out but the temperature sat at 0F well into the morning. It wasn't until mid day when the temp finally got up to 10F which was the high for the day. The forecast called for up to 10 mph winds which was to drop the wind chill down pretty low, but during the day there wasn't that much wind to speak of.
Occasional gusts would come through and toss snow from the tree tops. We ended up with half an inch on the deck just from the tree sloughing. I let the birds out and they ran outside then quickly turned around and ran back into the coop. The turkeys were the main ones to be out roaming while the ducks and chickens all hid in the warmer coop most of the day.
It was a bit after noon when I got the snowshoes on and hiked up the hill to look out over the valley.
Much of the day was spent feeding the fire place and keeping the house toasty warm. After 4 as it was getting dark I got the trailer hooked up and the empty barrels loaded for my trip to town for grain this morning. I'm quite thankful that my truck came with the block heater as it is very useful this winter. My truck started up without hesitation with the warmed oil.
I had been wanting a reason to be out at the coldest part of today so I was a bit happy to have the grain to get. It was 0F when I left at 5am and it is now -10F just before the sun comes up.
I have been to town for the grain and am going to have a fight to get 2 of the barrels emptied as they are frozen solid. I will likely have to take the sledge to the barrels to break the grain apart so I can empty them out. I may just wait a bit though as the temps are supposed to climb back up to the low 40s F next week... Probably best to empty them now though. Tonight is @stryeyz work Christmas party that I will meet her for.
