Predawn Grain Run Then Empty, More Snow, Grouping, Tub Fill, Tunnel, Midwinter Moss - Wednesday

My regular 4am natural wake up yesterday meant I could be out of the house nice and early to get into town to pickup grain. I had a bit of fun on the drive as one of the barrels kept trying to get lifted out of the bed of my truck and I would just catch the shadow and have to slow down. It was only until I hit the city then I could drive normal.

I got to the brewery and found a full barrel and a 1/4. I had no desire to haul the 1/4 barrel with so I just up ended it on the trailer in a pile after sliding the full barrel into the bed of the truck.

Then I drove down to the Steam Plant where there was more homeless under the train overpass than normal, all bundled up in the mild temps this morning.

It was just a drop off of empty barrels so I was in and out fast. A better view of the grain on the trailer as well.

I have to slide the ramp in next to a single barrel in the bed so the barrel doesn't go sliding from side to side on corners and possibly tip over.

With the blast coming I stopped to make sure I have a full tank of gas for it. Better to be prepared and I will be leaving the ruck running while waiting to pickup the boys at school on Friday.

With so little on the trailer I decided to back it up to the sheep gate and I shoveled all the grain off by headlamp. This way I was able to get the trailer unhooked so drop off would be easier.

I got the boys to school as it continued to try and snow. We got some NICE bands that came through and just dumped for about 5 minutes then moved past.

Pretty happy with the 40F air temp in the greenhouse at 7:45am. It was near 50 this afternoon after I kicked the light on full time for the next days.

IMG_20240110_074317.jpg

We would get little light bands coming through.

IMG_20240110_074359.jpg

Then another heavy band would dump as it passed by.

It was 9 when I went and emptied the full barrel. It went to the sheep pen where they dove into it after I pulled away.

I then let the birds out and they all filed off towards the grain. The ducks found it first and the chickens all followed the one smart hen that watched the fowl.

The last major band of snow lasted only minutes but it was a good one. We managed nearly 3/4" over the morning.

I made sure to get the tub filling early so the water would have ample time to reheat by evening time. It takes about half an hour to get it to right at the lip.

I'm taking time in the morning and afternoon for practice. I can only throw for 15 to 20 minutes at a time but the consistency of practice is starting to show in my groupings. It's taking far less time to warm up and find my aim and my throw is becoming more natural without having to think about it. The refined movements of the aim and throw are so difficult to zero in on.

Mid day the Real vs Athletico match was crazy as always. They have such an intense rivalry and this match showed it. A rather deserved 3-3 tie with loads of sparks flying the whole match.

After picking the boys up from school I was out around the farm checking on things for the coming freezer blast and tromped down to the tunnel for a view. The water flow is not too high and given the colder temps up higher makes sense. The creek starts on the north side of Mt Spokane where it is 2500 feet higher elevation.

Any time of year if I want to see nice fresh and LIVING greenery I have our moss covered boulder by the creek to go sit with. Like now it is mid winter but yet here the moss is unfrozen and vibrantly green coating the rock surrounded by snow.

There are numerous different mosses that have grown into the thick mats clinging to the basalt boulder.

It is just thick and lush and I would love to have an area of the farm that was covered in feet thick mats of it. We've been to place like that near Wells Gray Provincial park in Canada where the moss was feet thick and like walking on a pillow.

Almost neon green colors dotted in the moss.

This one looked really nifty to me. It has a very fern like look to it and the way the tendrils are spreading out over the rock looks super cool.

I got dinner made while we watched episodes, @stryeyz got home later than lately so ended up working later before she could get out to soak.

Today begins the slide to the freeze. By this time tomorrow morning it will be -9F and by this time this evening will be 0F. Going to be a fun next few days and I'll be out in it for sure. It's fun to experience these kinds of extremes, especially when not forced to try and exist outside in it for weeks on end. I'm going to keep an eye on the greenhouse today and watch the temps closely, boys to and from school, constant cleaning, Kraken play this afternoon, and come up with something for dinner.

I am usually out before most people head to work. I hate traffic so make sure to go when there is little to none to worry about. On my way home I see everyone heading into the city for work with no one going my direction.

Loved your shots of all the mosses, they look so soft and green. The cold is heading this way for Sunday night.

So much snow!! it looks magical to me as we never get snow, but I bet it makes homesteading a bit complicated. Best of luck to you and your animals.
