Last Cold Dip, Darts Copa Kraken, Clearing Snow, Greenhouse, Hike, Creek, Chores - Thursday

Coldest before dawn? Hah! Not yesterday morning. I woke to see the temperature sitting at 6F and thought that would be the low for the day but I was wrong.

I got the boys to school and then was starting on chores around the house when I saw the sun had come up over the hill and the temperature had fallen to 3F.

The Bahrain darts masters was on and I was able to watch Luke Littler win his match with relative ease. Most of the matches were pretty straight forward and they will finish the tournament this morning which I am keen to see.

The sun up the wind picked up and with all the champagne powder covering the trees the air became filled with the glittering flecks of snow. At times it almost white-outed when a good gust blew. I was surprised that there was still snow on the trees by dark but I guess it shows how much had been on the trees.

Mid day I was out clearing snow. The hangar got the snow pushed off first which now has 3 foot walls of snow on the outside. The hangar is holding up well to the winter and snows.

Then I went to the greenhouse and used a long pole to clear the snow off. Some had already sloughed off but there was still a good amount to move.

IMG_20240118_120608.jpg

As I cleared the snow I noticed that the inside of the plastic was opaque and not clear. I smacked the plastic and the inside exploded. It was a sheet of ice covering the entire inside of the greenhouse.

Once I had the snow cleared from the outside and the ice broken from the inside I went in the greenhouse and it looked like en explosion happened with the ice scattered everywhere. The good thing about it is it will return a lot of moisture to the soil when it melts in the next day or two since the freeze had wicked it out.

IMG_20240118_121220.jpg

The entire inner surface of the greenhouse was coated.

IMG_20240118_121227.jpg

With the snow off the greenhouse I went for a wander/hike up the hill to the upper property. The snow makes it kind of nice for climbing the hill since I can kick steps as I go. Makes it not quite so slippery.

The highway was still moving slow mid day despite the repeated plow passes.

IMG_20240118_121947.jpg

The deep freeze had not fully frozen the river and much of it is still clear and open flowing.

For some reason a few of the fir trees were bent over super far. The snow weighs nothing as it is champagne powder so it couldn't have been this storm. It must have been one of the prior that had a lot heavier and wetter snow. The sheep will like it when they eventually make it up there as they love to nibble the branches and bark.

IMG_20240118_122121.jpg

A good gust of wind came through and all the tree dumped big blops of snow and a few plowed into me coating my fleece in powder.

IMG_20240118_122131.jpg

The hillside is 90ft vertical and a good 50-60 degree slope that is covered in ice and snow. I decided to ski down it in my boots and it worked perfectly. My boots slid nicely through the snow and I made my way down fairly easily. It was rather fun.

The Copa came on and boy did it not disappoint. Athletico against Real is ALWAYS a great match up as they are bitter rivals. This game was another banger and Athletico pounded Real for a 4-2 win in overtime.

After picking the boys up from school they went to play for a while so I wandered down to the creek. The snow covered the ice and left only a few portals to the water.

The falls has a nice portal open and inside is a ton of icicles that have formed from the spray.

The moss on the boulder is managing the snows just fine. It is so well adapted to this environment and handles the freezes easily.

There are numerous cavities, hollows, and openings that allow spots for bugs and other creatures to hide.

While @stryeyz was at bible study across the valley I ran the vacuum around the house and got the highest traffic areas but have recesses, behind, and under a number of things to get today.

The Kraken finished off their road trip in Edmonton and were doing really well, until they weren't. A goal was called off that should have been good and that lead to the downfall.

I went looking at jerseys on their site and HOLY SHIT!!! $200 for a custom name/number jersey!?!?!? Even $140 for a plain jersey.... Jesus. I would love one but damn it that is stupid expensive for a shirt.

The practice rings really do help with darts. I have a focus for a bit of trying to get the 3x-20, 3x-19, and the bull. I'm getting closer and will keep working on it until it becomes natural and consistent.

@stryeyz is starting to throw some and we will be looking to get her a set of darts soon that has a better feel to them, more like mine with defined grooves on the barrel. It makes gripping and throwing a lot easier. Smooth barreled darts are harder to throw for me.

It was later when we got out to soak and managed a bit under an hour in.

IMG_20240118_205334.jpg

Today it's barely snowing and 20F now at 6am but it will be turning to rain today and will then be rain for the next week or so. This morning I have to move any snow I can before the rains turn it to slush and make it WAY harder to move. The Bahrain Darts Masters finishes today so I will have that on, I have a lot more cleaning to do around the house, somehow have to cajole the boys into cleaning their rooms which J is being SUPER obstinate about, then I will get a fire going in the pit and grill for dinner tonight.

I've also got a rather dark short story I am in the midst of working on that might get posted, though it may be a bit too dark to put out.

Lindo post. En espera de tu historia oscura. ¿Ficción o hechos reales?

Pura ficción. Necesito sacarme estas cosas oscuras de la cabeza y la mejor manera que se me ocurre es escribirlas.

I love how you are picking up interest in darts just like when you were interested in paragliding
It’s been long you did that
Right?

Yeah, flying is VERY dependent on the weather being right. Too little or too much wind and it's a no-go, rain and snow mean no flying as well.

All day in the winter is spent in the same way clearing the snow and setting things back in place.
