Bryce Canyon National Park in Winter - Sunday

avatar

We woke to snow again yesterday morning. Another couple of inches fell overnight but the roads had been getting plowed nicely and I was watching the road reports which showed everything open.

Once we got packed and on hte road we ended up driving through some rather heavy snow that was quite patchy. We would be in dense snow fall then suddenly pop out into blue skies.

The road into Bryce takes you up over a 7777ft pass and the top of the Grand Staircase to the park which sits right at 8000ft elevation.

Our first stop was the visitor center which has a number of nifty displays setup. They show a movie every hour about the canyon and its REALLY long history.

It was cold and clear with a pretty good wind blowing which made it probably about 10F windchill. We went to Sunrise point first and walked out to the viewpoint.

The boys were rather amazed by the views which were stunning with the snow cover over the hoodoos.

The view from the actual viewpoint was amazing and you can look up and down the canyon. This is looking towards the Sunset point where Wallstreet is.

We drove over to Sunset point which puts you right on the edge above the densest collection of hoodoos in the park.

There is a few trails that take you all through the tall towers but the one side is closed since rock fall happens a lot and the ice falling would not be fun to get hit by. This is also how the canyon is still being made.

The trail down is open but only to one side which is more open and less prone to rock and ice fall. The trail is snow covered and rather slick so we made no attempts at it.

The last of the overlooks we hit was Inspiration Point which is a rather good climb up the hill to the viewing spots.

The trail up is coated in snow that is not super soft but still slick. The wind was blowing pretty hard it was biting cold.

We opted for the first landing to view from since the top would have been a lot of hiking at 8000ft elevation. It was a bit noticeable to me the effort and breathing while were hiking around.

This is Wall Street from the other side. The Sunset viewpoint is in the middle top.

The top of Inspiration point can be seen in the top right where the people are standing.

I really like this shot as it shows the density of the hoodoos. As a kid I got to hike the trail and I remember it being an amazing experience which someday we will come back to do in the warmer weather. Same for Zion and hiking the narrows up the canyon.

After leaving Bryce Canyon we headed north through Salt Lake city and past the Wasatch mountains. It was a bit before 5pm when we got to our hotel in Pocatello Idaho in a snow storm. We went to eat at Applebees by our hotel and while we were eating the snow started to fully dump. It only amounted to a couple inches overnight so things should go fairly smooth today. We are going to eat breakfast with our friends then we will be heading north to Fairmont Hotsprings by Butte for our last night of the trip. Tuesday will be a 5ish hour drive home and back to the farm.

Your photos are amazing. Adding Bryce Canyon to my bucket list! Is September a good time of year to visit the Southwest? I would prefer to avoid the blistering heat of summer, slippery snow, AND hordes of tourists.
