Garden Update {Cannabis, Corn & Chives}.
Previously, I made a post about my dying cannabis plants and my attempts to heal them with Bone Meal, Kelp and Epsom Salt. The facts are that the plants weren't doing too well because of cold shock, some of them didn't do well and other plants are looking great! https://peakd.com/hive-140635/@ferngully/can-i-save-my-cannabis-plants Only a few plants were good enough to keep growing, however: Therefore, I decided to get some clones and seeds to replace them.
It's getting a bit too hot for planting new seeds or clones into the garden. It's starting to get over 80F. However, I don't think it's too late. I do have to be careful though and I bought some vermiculite to help with how dry the soil is. I have to water every morning and night. There is zero water retention. I've also been working on some compost piles, but they aren't ready yet. Below are the seedlings. Some of them have been eaten by bugs! Or by birds? An extremely sneaky chicken?
Below is one of the original plants that is doing great! It's one of two plants that I am keeping from the original seeds that I planted before the spring. Long story short, I planted some seeds early in my greenhouse, which basically fell apart. [I'm going to make a simpler, hoop-house this time]. Anyways, this plant is reaching for the stars! And I managed to throw together some horizontal fencing also known as a SCROG grow op. This plant is from regular seeds, so let's hope for female!
The entire area looks a bit junky. There is one corner with a giant pile of dirt and a broken greenhouse below. Like I said before, I'm going to build a simple hoop-house. I decided to break down the old pine logs I was using as support beams. The garden areas need some wood hummus anyways. The entire greenhouse is going to be deconstructed and the garden leveled. There is also a lot of junk back there like plastic cover, blue tarps and extra fencing! Everything needs to be cleaned.
There was a lot of work to do! I had to dig out a ton of dirt that was piled high into one corner of the #cannabis garden. Also, I had to move some pine tree logs out of the area without damaging anything [or myself]. I found garbage and placed into the trash can. This blog is really all about cleaning the area where I grow cannabis. I've been very unorganized. Sometimes you need to reorganize your entire garden area and use some old fashioned elbow grease.
Like I stated earlier, I not only sprouted seeds, but also got some clones. I started tapering the plant off [Putting them outside longer and longer], but ended up putting them in the ground a few days early because the weather is going to get over 80F consistently and there was an overcast day. The clones look great. At least for the fact that I've been keeping on the window sill and then tapering them into 80 degree weather. At the end of the day, they still seem healthy.
The main challenge this year has been watering. I already barely buy any compost: Relying on the halfway decent dirt around here and a bit of epsom salt or whatever the plant needs. This year, there just wasn't much rain and I ended up buying vermiculite. And also spread around all the stuff I mentioned in the beginning when my plants were dying: Bone Meal, Epsom Salt and Kelp. I'm also working on several large compost piles from weeds, but that isn't ready yet. The compost will not only supply nutrients, but will also help with water retention.
While I was leveling my #cannabis garden: I dug up an old concrete fill I did with some big grey bricks. It's a nice small patio area and I set up a metal table and chair that had been sitting sideways under the big Juniper Tree. Cleaning up the gardening area is making things look much more professional and makes things more functional. I'm going to make a small pathway that leads to the table & chair combo. And the rest of the space will be used for growing plants. I can sit in my cannabis garden and eat breakfast while my butler reads the stocks and hands me orange juice.
I saved some Chive Seeds today. I love Chive Onions and I wanted to harvest some seeds. I grabbed some of the dead plants and stacked them on the table to dry. When you harvest seeds usually you have to keep drying the plant so the seed works properly. Otherwise the seeds will be too fresh. That's an over simplification but ... check out the sage sticks! I've been practicing typing them up. As soon as the other plants go to seed, I will harvest them: Creating a seed collection for next year. Of course, many of the plants will be eaten first ... but, I will save some for seeding.
Warning: This is going to be a CORNy post.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I'll be here all week. Seriously though, it's my first time growing corn.
The ornamental corn seedlings are looking great! You can see some golden vermiculite on the ground that is going to help with water retention. It's dry out here! Corn needs a lot of nutrients, so I layered some compost, kelp and bone meal into the soil by the corn plants.
Alright ladies and gentlemen, before I leave you: And I hope you all enjoy this longer form post by the way. I've seen other #hivegarden posts that are long form updates that do well. So, I figured I'd do a general update and try to squeeze all the content together. Anyways ... I wanted to show a project I did where I decided to plant beans from a 16 bean soup bag. Basically I am growing a bunch of random different kind of edible beans. Try and identify the bean strains below!
For my final #Gardenjournal entry: I will share some low light photography of the #cannabis plant. I know that's why you are reading this post! You want to watch me grow cannabis. In all seriousness though, if you made it this far please like and subscribe. I will make more long form garden journal update type posts. Maybe once a week? I like blogging my garden. It's like writing a scientific entry. Hopefully everyone enjoyed this weeks random rants and plants! Comment your thoughts below.
Nice! Glad to hear some plants pulled through. Good luck with the clones & seeds 🌱!
