The Smallest Pizza Shop (In Johannesburg) – A Series of Photographs
We stopped for something to eat. We did not realise that it would be the smallest pizza shop we have ever seen. As we climbed out of the car, we started to look for the restaurant, only to find a small window that looked directly in on the pizza oven. There was only one chair and a bench. It was in a walkthrough that led to the other side of the building. It was nothing special or spectacular, there were not elaborate decorations. But this all added to the charm of the little shop that left its mark on us.
Life is all about presentation, the outside, what we can provide the other on the surface – what can you put on the outside so that people will buy and talk about you. It does not matter what is on the inside.
But sometimes when you are lucky you will find places and people that are not worried about the issues of the surface, where the only décor is a big cement slab table, with some dried flowers on the top, and the world’s most delicious pizza. For when we tasted the pizza, we could almost not believe our taste buds.
It was some of the best pizza I have ever tasted. And I went back to buy more. Sometimes you just find these gems that blow you away. You wonder why the world has sunk into this weird thing where quality has suffered so greatly that a piece of plastic has become the epitome of quality. In a world where we pay almost more for cheap fast food than quality cooked food.
We found this gem of a pizza place that sells the best pizza almost cheaper than the mass produced “cheap” pizza in our country. (It is funny how people will pay, for example, almost $5.00 for fast food chain restaurant pizza and they will say nothing about it, but when they pay $5.00 at a “fancy” place, they will have something negative to say about it…)
In the future, I will again find this little gem (because it is sadly not close to where I live), and I will again find a little happiness in a world where quality has gone down so badly that everything tastes like plastic and sugar.
For now, we can only seek out these little enclaves of quality, of worth, of essence, that speaks to our souls.
Happy photographing and happy eating.
All of the musings and writings are my own, albeit inspired by the smallest pizza shop to ever cross my path (because I was not crossing its path). All of the photographs are my own, taken with my Nikon D300 and Nikkor 50 mm lens.

Thank you!
What a beautiful reflection on simplicity and authenticity. The charm of this tiny pizza shop really shines through your words and photos—proof that the best things often come in the most unexpected packages. 🍕📸✨
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it.
I can imagine how delicious they are; that flavor the wood gives them is unique. I'm so sorry it's so far away to be able to visit the place. Thanks for sharing.
Nothing comes close to wood fired oven pizza! Indeed, and thank you so much.
