Searching for Bugs Beneath a Myriad of Leaves

Saying goodbye is never easy...

This friend, the olive thrush (turdus olivaceus), looks at me whilst digging for bugs beneath the many leaves that lay beneath the lemon trees.

My best friend and girlfriend @urban.scout is going home today and I am here writing about birds trying to feel a little better.

Metaphorically, the little bird tells me everything will be fine.

We have been having some terribly warm weather the last couple of days. Everything is wilted, and the birds are sitting with open beaks in search of water. Underneath the trees where shade also hides from the sun, the birds are always in search of bugs that might be crawling underneath the leaves.

It is only when I heard the leaves rustling and a constant squirreling that I realized it was the olive thrush just outside my room. My first thoughts were that it was someone who was trying to break in... My heart stopped for a moment, but then I saw the small bird underneath the tree flinging leaves all about the place.

In action, he throws the leaves to and fro, either in search of food or appropriate nesting material. He was so quick that my camera struggled to stay in focus!

Locked in, the stare tells you everything: he sees his prey and he wants it!

He jumps away and flies toward the small pool of water that sits behind the house. I run through the house to get to the window where this little pool is. I open the door slowly, just before he flies away he turns around and says: Hi!

Postscriptum, or So long for now!

I have a saying in my home language:

"Verlange kweek digkuns"

It roughly translates to "Longing grows poetry".

For now, she has left, like the olive thrush who scuttles away.

But time heals and we will meet again. Soon. Like the olive thrush that will return to the garden in search of more bugs.

I hope you enjoyed the couple of photographs of this lovely bird. All of the writing is my own and the photographs were taken with my Nikon D300 and Tamron 300mm lens. Happy birding, stay well.
