Hornet rescue mission for POB weekly contest 💙

avatar

Thursday, 20th of April 2023 [61]

I saw the topic of this week’s #POBphotocontest - INSECTS and I swear I had a good capture in mind, but when I went looking for it, I couldn’t find it.

I really, really need to organise my photo albums on both phones, cause finding anything is a bit of a nightmare.

What do you know! Once you decided in your heart to do something, the universe has some spooky ways of helping you to achieve this.

This time round the universe showed up in the form of Danny, my coworker. He run into the inspection room and said:

‘Monika, come, quick! There is a huge hornet on the shopfloor and you wanna take a picture of it!’

Wouldn’t you say my coworkers know me way too well by now? 😂

I didn’t even understand what he wants me to photograph at first, but I followed hih with my phone camera and there it was… a big bee, or a hornet like he said. Perfect insect for this week’s contest!

After taking a few captures on our dirty floor, I picked up a piece of cardboard to take it outside.

Of course, I had to take more pictures outside, since the light is much better here and decided that this one is my contest picture:

I scrolled through the contest hashtag today and there are many more interesting pictures for the contest, but you know - mine has a rescue story attached 😂

I found a tiny green area outside and placed the carboard next to it.

Good boy (or girl) walked straight where I wanted it to go.

For a little moment he walked around the greens, but I think he felt a bit too wobbly there.

So he turned around and headed towards safety of the cardboard.

And eventually back on it. What do I do 🤷🏻‍♀️ Seems like he prefered the carboard, so I left it there and walked back to my office.

Here I saw a bottle of water and thought that maybe my rescued hornet needs a sip of drink to regain strenght. The carboard flew away with the wind by then and I found him on the ground underheath the cardboard.

I poured the water close to him and he seemed to be happy for a while.

He was flopping his tiny hands and stuck his face in it.

Not sure whether he had enough of drink or whether he didn’t want water at all, but soon enough he moved away from the water.

Then slowly walked away towards the green patch. Truth be told, at this point I left the bee be. I did what I could think of and it was time for me to get back to work.

That’s where the rescue story ends. I have no idea whether I actually rescued him or not, but I didn’t dare to go back to that little patch of green to find out. I’d like to think it was a success and he’s still #aliveandthriving

Until next time 💙

You did well. I guess it will be fine in the green.

It's surprising to see insects so humble and cooperative. I guess it's hurt somewhere.

Meanwhile, good luck in the contest.

Yes, I also think it was hurt and unable to hurt me at this point. I hope it survived afterwards 💙

Haha 😂 I’m not sure if it was a hornet or just a big bee, but it was clearly in distress, so I had to do something to help. I don’t think it was capable of flying or stinging at this point.

I don’t have macro lenses or anything sis. I just get really close to them and zoom my phone camera as much as I can before the picture becomes blurry 😁 You should try some time! 💙

Nice photos. At my mom's house there are some bees 🐝 you can put them in the palm of your hand and they don't sting you. They are friendly bees, I often rescue them when they fall into a bucket of water. I liked your story. Greetings 🤗

There is one thing that is my Kryptonite. Yes the flying insects that have stingers!! You got the cardboard and my heart started beating fastly, lol. I feel if it was me I would have been stung. I'm glad it was so responsive to your needs to help. Pictures where great as I looked with my arm full extended 🤣.

You know I didn't get stung until I was 42 years old, I think. Now I've been stung twice oh wait 3 times as one hit me twice. Both were wasps. I guess I don't have the flash like reflexes I use to, when I avoided. Haha now you know one of my fears. I read once but won't twice, haha.

!LOLZ You do make me laugh Bob! 😂😂😂

Like with everything else - animals, insects - they all pick up on our emotions and a fear is one of a very strong signal, so you could be right, you could be stung! Although I doubt it, cause this guy was seriously barely alive. I love getting close and photographing them. I approach them with nothing but love and curiosity. After all, without those stinging insects and other pollinators there would be no life on Earth.

Sorry to hear you were stung twice Bob! It hasn’t happened to me yet, maybe besides the time I sat on one. They only ever sting once in their life, when they feel in grave danger, so maybe something you did tip them off. Hard to say, but hopefully it won’t happen again 💙

Bees and hornets only sting once in their lives. Wasp can do it as they please 🥺 once was mowing the grass near shed. The other was at work co workers picked up a rack and they swarmed out. Twenty minutes later I was stung. Wasp with a memory? Lol

Haha 😂 I don’t know if I could even tell a difference between a bee and a wasp. Whenever I look at google pictures of the two they look all the same to me 🙈

Ooo I love this story! Resonating so much with helping out the little ones, even if they are classified "dangerous"! You might like the idea of creating a little drink station for the insects there, it's a very easy&simple setup I just made a post about that yesterday 🤗🌺
Have a lovely week!

Aww, that’s so nice! At the state he was in, I doubt he could be able of harming anyone.
Great idea! I’ll check out your post 💙
