Greetings dear readers, today I give life and love to my blog with another curious art and that fills me with good news so that at some point I can fulfill a dream come true.
Causalmente, como describí en mi de post Exlibris “lo que uno busca lo encuentra”. Siendo así un mes después, fui invitada a recibir gratuitamente más información sobre este arte del grabado que tanto me encanta.
Causally, as I described in my post Exlibris "what one looks for one finds". So a month later I was invited to receive more information free of charge about this art of printmaking that I love so much.
La artista plástico Carolina Jiménez IG:@caro.barro.arte, me invito al Museo de Arquitectura ubicado en el centro de Caracas, para asistir a su taller de xilografía en el marco del cierre las fiestas de las artes en homenaje a Armando Reverón, donde hubo varios días de talleres gratuitos sobre: arte textil, serigrafía, acuarela y otros, de los que me enteré muy tarde.
The artist Carolina Jiménez IG:@caro.barro.arte, invited me to the Museo de Arquitectura located in downtown Caracas, to attend her workshop as part of the closing of the festivities of the arts in honor of Armando Reverón, where there were several days of free workshops on: textile art, screen printing, watercolor and others, of which I found out very late.
Sin embargo, algunas veces creo en el refrán “nunca es tarde cuando la dicha es buena”, y por eso allí estuve el día y la hora pautada para recibir nueva información sobre este excepcional arte, del que me queda muy claro, que, para realizarlo de forma profesional, se requiere de dinero, debido a los materiales y espacio acorde para realizar este arte, pero de los que ya, una vez obtenido una buena parte de ellos, es posible realizar las obras que se deseen sin tanta dificultad.
However, sometimes I believe in the saying "it is never late when happiness is good", and that is why I was there on the day and time scheduled to receive new information about this exceptional art, of which it is very clear to me that, to perform it professionally, money is required, due to the materials and space needed to perform this art, but of which, once a good part of them is obtained, it is possible to perform the desired works without so much difficulty.
Unos días antes Carolina nos sugirió lleváramos una madera previamente preparada con lija y aceita de linaza. Con la lija gruesa se quitan los grumos de la madera, y luego con lija suave se pule la superficie quedando lisa para el trabajo.
A few days before, Carolina suggested that we take a piece of wood previously prepared with sandpaper and linseed oil. With the coarse sandpaper we remove the lumps from the wood, and then with soft sandpaper we polish the surface, leaving it smooth for the work.
Así lo hice y una vez limpiada y lijada la madera, procedí a barnizar con aceita de linaza, una sustancia muy pura que sirve para hacer la madera más blanda al momento de tallar, a parte la libera de polillas. Este procedimiento lo hice en un día con intervalo de horas, cubriendo y dejando secar la madera con aceite de linaza en 4 etapas, para al final pintar de negro.
So I did and once the wood was cleaned and sanded, I proceeded to varnish with linseed oil, a very pure substance that serves to make the wood softer at the time of carving, besides it frees it from moths. I did this procedure in one day with an interval of hours, covering and letting the wood dry with linseed oil in 4 stages, to finally paint it black.
La madera que llevé y preparé fue una MDF, pero según la información recibida en el taller, este tipo de madera no es muy recomendable para estos trabajos, por ser un conglomerado de residuos de madera comprimidos con ácidos que la hacen tóxica y con el tiempo se deforma el grabado, y no permite buen socavado con las gubias, más que empieza a soltar arenilla de la misma madera, cosa que al llevarme la madera luego corroboré en casa.
The wood that I took and prepared was an MDF, but according to the information received in the workshop, this type of wood is not very advisable for these works, for being a conglomerate of wood residues compressed with acids that make it toxic and with time the engraving is deformed, and does not allow good undercutting with the gouges, more than begins to release grit from the same wood, something that when I took the wood later I corroborated at home.
Al llegar al taller con mis materiales, nuestra artista nos recibió muy contenta, a pesar de esperar a catorce personas que se había registrado, de las que solo asistimos cinco, cosa que considero fuera de todo sentimiento de mezquindad, fue genial, pues creo el tiempo y los materiales no hubiera alcanzado. Allí emocionada nos refirió el origen del “arte de la Xilografía” enfocándose puntualmente en las técnicas básicas para desarrollarlo en cualquier momento.
Upon arriving at the workshop with my materials, our artist received us very happily, despite waiting for fourteen people who had registered, of which only five attended, which I consider out of all feelings of pettiness, it was great, because I think the time and materials would not have been enough. There, excited, she told us about the origin of the "art of Xylography" focusing on the basic techniques to develop it at any time.
Por el factor tiempo hicimos una matriz colectiva (un arte tallado sobre madera entre todos) bajo el acompañamiento y directrices de Carolina, allí íbamos reconociendo el material, recomendándonos ella utilizar madera: contra enchapado, caoba o chapilla, previamente preparada con el aceite de linaza, para que al tallar la madera, sea más fluido el pasar las gubias sobre la misma.
For the time factor we made a collective matrix (an art carved on wood among all) under the guidance and guidelines of Carolina, there we were recognizing the material, she recommended us to use wood: plywood, mahogany or veneer, previously prepared with linseed oil, so that when carving the wood, it is more fluid to pass the gouges on it.
De igual manera nos refirió la importancia de las imágenes que deseemos plasmar, jugando entre la figura y el fondo con formas positivo = blanco y negativo= negro. Con este juego podríamos crear texturas y composiciones interesantes en la matriz, que no se quedarían en una simple línea.
He also referred to the importance of the images we want to capture, playing between the figure and the background with positive shapes = white and negative = black. With this game we could create interesting textures and compositions in the matrix, which would not remain in a simple line.
Entonces con paciencia íbamos familiarizándonos con el material, conociendo distintas formas utilizar los instrumentos, entre estos las gubias las cuales sus puntas deben ser lijadas cuidadosamente con kerosene, piedras de amolar o lijas suaves, esto para las gubias rudimentarias como las mías, las profesionales como las “speedball” no requiere afilarse con tanta frecuencia.
Then with patience we were getting familiar with the material, knowing different ways to use the instruments, among these the gouges whose tips must be carefully sanded with kerosene, grinding stones or soft sandpaper, this for the rudimentary gouges like mine, the professional ones like the speedball” do not require sharpening as often.
Al momento de hacer un grabado a parte de sentir y disfrutar el proceso de hacer la matriz, imprimir sobre el papel nos indica si nuestro trabajo fue productivo, siendo así nuestra facilitadora nos presentó una forma de trabajar el papel, el cual puede ser de arroz o tipo fabriano.
At the moment of making a print, apart from feeling and enjoying the process of making the matrix, printing on the paper indicates if our work was productive, being so our facilitator presented us with a way of working the paper, which can be rice or fabriano type.
En este caso ella nos presentó un papel fabriano, que roció un poco con agua y lo tapó con un pañito para que al momento de imprimir el papel estuviera sedoso y listo para la impresión. ¡me pareció súper importante la forma tan minuciosa como ella trabaja grabado, a parte de la limpieza que es indispensable!
In this case she presented us with a fabriano paper, which she sprayed with water and covered it with a small cloth so that when printing the paper would be silky and ready for printing, I found it very important the meticulous way she works with engraving, apart from the cleanliness that is essential!
Lista la hoja para imprimir y la matriz, llegó el momento de ver el resultado de lo que juntos hicimos, colocando con la espátula la tinta tipográfica sobre la lámina de acrílico, para luego pasar el rodillo de caucho, y de este modo cargar o entintar y deslizar sobre la matriz, en la cual se colocó la hoja previamente preparada, pasando sobre ella la cucharilla) de forma circular sobre la hoja, el trabajo con la cucharilla sustituye a la prensa.
Ready the sheet to print and the matrix, it was time to see the result of what we did together, placing with the spatula the typographic ink on the acrylic sheet, and then pass the rubber roller, and thus load or ink and slide on the matrix, in which the previously prepared sheet was placed, passing over it the spoon) in a circular way on the sheet, the work with the spoon replaces the press.
¡Listo el primer resultado!, luego experimentamos sobre otros dos tipos de papel para conocer su acabado, aprovechando descargar tinta del rodillo y lámina. Vale destacar que la tinta tipografía es muy aceitosa y rendidora, y para limpiar los instrumentos de esta tinta se debe utilizar el mismo kerosene, jabón en polvo, agua y paños para secar, de este modo se evitan residuos y queda el material limpio para otra ocasión.
The first result is ready, then we experimented on two other types of paper to know its finish, taking advantage of unloading ink from the roller and foil. It is worth mentioning that the typography ink is very oily and yielding, and to clean the instruments of this ink you should use the same kerosene, soap powder, water and cloths to dry, thus avoiding residues and leaving the material clean for another occasion.
Mientras hacíamos el taller conversábamos de lo linda, compartimos tecito y con un pequeño refrigerio que nos llevó Carolina, allí una de mis compañeras de taller fue una inspiración para mí, la Sra. Doris mujer de 65 años actualmente está sacando una nueva carrera en lo que toda la vida quiso estudiar “Diseño Gráfico”, a pesar del exceso de tareas y las dificultades economía para sostener sus estudios, ella está muy feliz y llena de vida gracias a esa decisión que tomó.
While we were doing the workshop we talked about the beautiful, we shared tea and a small snack that Carolina brought us, there one of my workshop partners was an inspiration for me, Mrs. Doris, a 65 year old woman is currently taking a new career in what she wanted to study all her life "Graphic Design", despite the excess of tasks and economic difficulties to support her studies, she is very happy and full of life thanks to this decision she made.
De este modo se me despertó de nuevo las ganas de volver a estudiar, hacer curso o talleres, y pero en este caso “artes” siento que necesito volver a conectar con eso que tanto me gusta, trabajar con materiales orgánicos y conocer otras formas de expresión a través del “arte manual”. Desde mi posición como maestra de manualidades para niños, siento en estos momentos es indispensable actualizarme y obtener nuevos conocimientos, para llevarles actividades novedosas y recreativas, igual pienso en hacerlo para mi satisfacción personal y cultura general.
In this way I was awakened again the desire to return to study, take courses or workshops, "graphic arts" I feel that I need to connect with what I like so much, work with organic materials and learn other forms of expression through "manual art". From my position as a teacher of handicrafts for children, I feel at this time it is essential to update and obtain new knowledge, to bring them new and recreational activities, I also think about doing it for my personal satisfaction and general culture.

Muchas felicidades! Me alegra mucho que hayas recibido una clase magistral y sobre todo, el impulso que ha dado en tu crecimiento personal. Las manualidades son un arte que transmite sentimientos y sensaciones que llevamos en el corazón! Éxitos!
¡Nunca es tarde cuando la dicha es buena! totalmente cierto, que sabroso es aprender un oficio, un arte, crear con tus manos y ver el resultado final previo de un trabajo minucioso, el arte del grabado, una vez aprendí el arte del grabado sobre metal, orfebrería, pero delicado total, con ácido nítrico sino me equivoco, mejor se lo dejo a los expertos jeje, pero sobre madera me encantaría aprender!

Debido a las nuevas técnicas de impresión, que pueden ser más fáciles e inmediatas, el arte de la xilografía es poco utilizado en esta época. Se agradece que nos hayas instruido, de manera sencilla, en esta técnica de tallado y grabado. Saludos, @evev
