Our Only Source of Water

Coming out from the entrance of my one room apartment [which is most likely the most good looking apartment in the community] I decided to take a shot of our only source of water. It is a manual borehole pump installed by unisef for the little community of Passbrothers [in Benue State Nigeria]. To get water with that manual machine, you simply have to move the handle up and down. It definitely sound simple; but then, taking your bucket and your jerrycans down to the pump and bringing it back to the apartment each time you want to make use of water is no simple task😒.

This is really something! You know, for me, I think this is one of the best ways to get water…it’s straight from the earth, no added chemicals to make you sick :)

I bet you do have the best looking apartment, you seem like a very well kept man of style!

Definitely! But carrying the water to the apartment isn’t an easy task at all.

I can’t even wait to leave the so called best apartment😀. Thank God I am gradually coming to the end of my service.

Thank you so much for coming by my friend

💯my friend!

May I ask, what service is it which approaches its end?

So sorry I didn’t explain earlier.

The Nigerian Government has an National Youth Service program for all of her graduates. As part of the Service program, each individual is sent far from his place of origin or residence to do a one year community service program. At the end of your service a National certificate will be given to you.

That sounds like a really cool program, but I guess it really matters what the people think!
Is it something that people generally think of positively? Or is this something most people dislike or feel forced into?

It’s for me a cool program too. But some people can’t stay away from there comfort zone for a long period of time. And those kind of people wouldn’t like to involve themselves on that. As much as I am having a good time and learning lots of new things from strange culture myself, I am also missing home. But I am really happy I enrolled on this.

That makes a lot of sense, and I think I’d be the same way as you. I did the army thing here. I liked being out of my comfort zone and many of the things that came with it (actually it was in the army that I was able to cut loose and start singing with my guitar!), although I have some reservations about the intentions/motivations of my government…

Wow! I some times think about joining the army myself, but I have not been able to gather enough courage. The actual reason behind the NYSC program is to instill some military lifestyle in the candidates. I am yet to publish a post on my NYSC experience: I will get to give a detailed experience of what it looks like there. Is just that I am yet to find a perfect community to post that.

That makes sense, the right community is a very important thing here. I will be excited to see this, when you do it!
