Self Inflicted Pain?

avatar

If I were to describe what I'm going to write about in one word, it would be brutal. Yes, brutal would be the word I would use without any exaggeration and you'll see why.

With a title like that, you would think I wound need a NSFW tag, but I can assure you, it's not the case, so this is safe for work, safe for life, but it's still brutal 😂. Bear with me and I'll show you why.

I tried to Google self inflicted pain as a term, to see the proper meaning, but Google gives me self inflicted injury instead, so let's see what it means.

Nonsuicidal self-injury, often simply called self-injury, is the act of harming your own body on purpose, such as by cutting or burning yourself. It's usually not meant as a suicide attempt. This type of self-injury is a harmful way to cope with emotional pain, sadness, anger and stress.

While self-injury may bring a brief sense of calm and a release of physical and emotional tension, it's usually followed by guilt and shame and the return of painful emotions. Life-threatening injuries are usually not intended, but it's possible that more-serious and even fatal self-harm could happen. source

It's not a joke, it's actually a very serious thing. I'm lucky as I've only seen such thing in movies, when addicts (mostly), slammed the door on their hand to cause pain as the adrenaline rush that comes with such an injury helped them short term. At least that's how this terrible thing has been presented. Or others cut themselves in an attempt to deal with disappointment, anger and so on. I truly hope no one is in this situation, everyone on Hive can deal with their problems in a proper way.

20230901_165443a.jpg

So then why such a title, you may ask and rightfully so. I'll explain it in a minute, but first let me show you some photos.

20230901_165503a.jpg

In case you're wondering, these are real stones on wood and varnished. Cute, small stones you find on beaches or pretty much everywhere. But what is this thing, you may ask. So let me tell you a story. A true one.

20230901_165527a.jpg

Look at how cute these stones are 😍

20230817_150124a.jpg

The whole thing started almost two weeks ago, with this post, where I posted a photo with some wooden frames on the ground, filled with different materials, ranging from sand to rocks.

20230817_150157a.jpg

The purpose of those frames was this. Walking on those materials is therapeutic, or it supposed to be therapeutic. And those are not my feet if you're wondering.

So after I posted this photo, I had a conversation with @depressedfuckup about how healthy those acupuncture shoes are and so on. You can read the conversation here.

The truth is, I had a pair of slippers years ago, that were made of food and had a tough spiky rubber upper part that was designed in a way to massage the foot. I love those and wore them for years, but one day the tough rubber became a sticky, soft thing (nothing lasts forever by the way) and had to throw them away. It suited me nicely and was constantly searching for something similar, but never found any.

So after the conversation I had with @depressedfuckup, I had a look around to see what the market has to offer, but was not able to find any, similar to that one. However, I came across these ones.

20230901_170220a.jpg

Now you may understand why I said this at the beginning of my post:

If I were to describe what I'm going to write about in one word, it would be brutal. Yes, brutal would be the word I would use without any exaggeration and you'll see why.

20230901_165335a.jpg

😂😂😂 Absolutely brutal!

20230901_165412a.jpg

Most likely you think I have lost my mind for buying such slippers, but trust me, I did my homework and knew exactly what I'm getting myself into.

20230901_165416a.jpg

Before you jump to conclusions, these slippers are not for walking kilometers outside. The purpose of wearing these is therapeutic and for a limited time. The seller says you need to get used to them first, so don't push it.

20230901_165419a.jpg

They say use it for 10 minutes every day to get used to it. But trust me, you are a hero if you resist for 10 minutes. I tried it and gave it up after 2 minutes. The good thing is, after you take them off, you feel the effect for 10 minutes or so.

reflexology-foot-chart-with-organs.jpg

source

Here's a reflexology foot chart, for those who are not familiar with how reflexology works.

Reflexologists claim that by manipulating the feet, as guided by a reflexology foot chart, they can:
Reflexology is becoming increasing popular as you can learn to do it to yourself to relieve pain and stress.

  • Balance Energy: the flow of Qi throughout the body
  • Improve Circulation: of blood, nutrients and nerve signals
  • Improve Health: boost the immune system
  • Promote Healing
  • Cleanse The Body: from various toxins
  • Release Endorphins: chemical which help to reduce pain and stress
  • Promote Relaxation
    source

20230901_165544a.jpg

Is this equal to the actual reflexology? No, not by far as you can't compare it with the actual foot massage. However, it must be good for something :)

20230901_165551a.jpg

At this phase, I'm training my feet to get used to these stones and taking it easy. Exaggerating can cause a lot of harm, so no rush as speed is not the goal here. Having positive results is.

Self Inflicted Pain? This is the title of my post and now you know why I said that. So tell me, is this self inflicted pain? 😂 Would you buy such slippers? Would you wear them? 😂 Are you brave enough?

So jokes aside, footwear is an important piece in one's life, contributing to our health in many ways. Wearing the wrong shoes can cause a lot of harm and many can't even see it. Wearing the right shoes can not only save you from pain, but can also contribute to keeping your feet, your bones and spinal cord healthy. Foot massage is also important and it can stimulate reflex areas and help in many ways.

I still want a pair of wooden slippers, just need to find the right one.

This one is calling my name. I had an exact one when i was a kid. It's kind of retro style, but I don't mind at all, on the contrary. If the price tag is still valid, it costs around 29€, which is convenient for me.

But the ideal one would be this one combined with a spiky rubber upper part, which really massages the foot.

scholl-new-massage-papucs-1.jpg
source

This has that spiky rubber upper part, but don't like the style, it's for grannies. Scholl is a respected brand, so these are medical slippers, not stylish to show off, but still.

I think this is my reflection for today. It's a crazy post, but we can't be serious all the time, can we?

Looks like walking barefoot...but with extra steps 😆
The concept is pretty cool. Would like to read some peer reviewed article to see if they truly are beneficial or just a marketing strat.

Also, do not appreciate the clickbait title 😅😅😅 gave me a mini heart attack

😂😂😂 I thought you know me by now. I'm a tough one, would never do such thing, but I understand the feeling as you know more than anyone else, what it means and how serious it would be.

Well, maybe I'll look for feedback to see, who has been able to survive the brutal torture 😂

I know foot reflexology definitely works and I have had several experiences where a certain part was massaged in the foot causing a reaction elsewhere in the body so it makes total sense this does something as well..

Looking at these stones they seem a bit high to me, maybe a bit too much, or is it doable?

Let us know over time if it works for you and if you see some changes since you've started doing this.

The stones look big on the photo, but these are macro photos. However, they still have a size that makes a difference as stepping on them is not like wearing normal shoes.

I will definitely do an update, but I need time as I'm leaving for 10 days and not taking these torture tools with me.

I always wondered if walking on a bed with nails would also not be as painful as you expect. Never tried it though, only my boyfriend tried laying on a bed of nails once in a science museum in Budapest.

Haha I understand you're not taking them with you :)

Enjoy the trip/holiday.. and have a good weekend!

I would never walk on a bed of nails or on ember as i see in the movies.

Have a nice Sunday :)

I wouldn't buy those shoes. I get a pebble in my shoe and it drives me crazy. I may have stood up with those shoes and said this isn't going to happen. Reading this I don't why I but thought what would it be like walking across a long fire pit with hot stones. I wouldn't do that either, lol.

Now the last shoes pictured are Dr. Scholl's shoes? I think they are 🤔 I have owned a few and those do help with pain. I know many people who wear them dailey. I always find foot pain as an excuse to go get a pedicure and let my technician know my feet hurt, haha. Doesn't always work and I have to resort to some Epsom salt treatment. Have a great weekend!

Yes, they are Dr. Scholl and you're right, these are specially designed to help. These are medical shoes, made based on studies. Medical personnel wears them as it helps with standing a lot.

Thanks for stopping by and enjoy your weekend. Fishing? 😏 🐠

I must confess I had read this post for a while now but I kept looking at your newbie section for quite a while. So, in order:

It's an interesting subject. I have heard before about this kind of thing, but not by proper name. People would strap an onion ring in their feet to, according to them, purifiy themselves. Seemed to me like smelly business (haha), but this makes... a little more sense? What do you exactly feel after getting stones piercing your feet after a few minutes?

And thank you for the sharing to newbies. It had set lots of things right for me although, most I had to learn with my own... self inflicted damage, smashing my head against reality. You know, the FUN way. Like these slippers.

What do you exactly feel after getting stones piercing your feet after a few minutes?

I feel the spots where the stone touched my feet. It's like the stones would still be there. It's a strange feeling.

You're welcome, I'm glad the newbie guide helped you understand things better. Let' me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to help :)

But trust me, you are a hero if you resist for 10 minutes.

Haha, even 5 minutes of wearing this would make us heroes 😂

I would not need to buy such slippers as the town where we live has a beach with pebbles. We practice walking in them each time we go to that beach 😂

You are right, 5 minutes would be quite a record. I hope I can get there before the end of the year 😂

You live near a beach? I envy you 😟

As you say, for health purposes, I would love to buy this. I have read somewhere also that this kind of slippers have health benefits. Than to go to certain reflexologist, we can have the same treat at home having these slippers.😊

I'm not sure if you can have the same effect, but these slippers do something too. At least they hurt your feet 😂

I could not imagine myself wearing that kind of slipper but I'm curious on its effect. I think that stems from Chinese beliefs and their acupuncture. Stones are the one of the hardest thing to walk to, I mean I can't even stand on the stones for a minute haha!

As I mentioned in my post, these are not to wear, just for a short period, like 5 - 10 minutes. I think you can get used to them in time, at least I hope so :)

I guess it takes a lot of time to become comfortable but it's so interesting. Something I never heard of.

Those slippers look... Painful...

Have you already felt any benefit? they're worth it?

Painful indeed and it is painful to stand on them, but you get used to it. Or not 😁

The truth is, not yet as I only had them on a couple of times. I had to leave home for 10 days and did not take them with me, so it remains to be seen once I return home.

I understood what you meant by self-inflected the minute I saw those slippers. My feet hurt just by looking at it.😂

The truth is, I had a pair of slippers years ago, that were made of food

I think this was a typo, but it made me go “you had a pair of slippers made of what!!!” when I read it.😂😂

I see addicts cutting themselves in movies a lot, but I never really thought of the psychology that was behind it. I’m honestly perplexed by why they’d go that length for adrenaline that 2 hours on the right social media can give them excess of.

Yeah, there's a typo.

Indeed, self inflicted pain it is, doing it to myself, but let's hope it's only painful at the beginning and not after. I have to be consistent though.

And yes, some people are harming themselves unfortunately.

Self inflicted pain is very real, my lecturer was rebuking a course mate of mine because she had a ring in her teeth , and the reason she gave was that, she needed to inflict pain on herself because of the pain she was going through that time. Well she did not give us the gist about the pain.

And it turned into a discussion, some said they had nose ring, some ring in their navel.

They tagged it ‘coping skill of overcoming pain’ My lecturer was like that’s a negative coping skill and tried giving everyone counsel. At that moment all they needed was rehabilitation.

Well, I will love to try those slippers☺️
