Independence Day Getaway to the North Shore

I'll begin by saying I'm going to keep this post more brief than normal because the Wi-Fi connection very slow and janky (reminiscent of the late 90's) but I suppose that's part of the charm of this place.

My wife, son, and I decided to escape the hot, Canadian wildfire smoke-laden Twin Cities for the much cooler North Shore of Lake Superior a few days ago to celebrate the holiday.

We’re spending our first two nights in a cabin at the Stonegate on Superior resort. Our cabin is basically a tiny home and we’re only thirty feet from the shore and the cool breeze from the lake brings the air temperature down almost ten degrees. The footage below is from the shoreline just below our cabin.

Today we hiked at Gooseberry Falls. The weather was absolutely perfect, hovering in the low seventies.

Us.jpg

We braved the slippery rocks to get close enough to touch the waterfall and feel the breeze off the rushing water.

We continued on down the trail along the Gooseberry River about two miles south of the falls. The views were stunning for the entire hike. I'm absolutely blown away by now much this pristine wilderness is brimming with life.

Trail.jpg

We won't be here for the super moon but we're only a few days away from it and the reflection off the water at night is stunning.

Deer.jpg

I crossed paths with a deer during my evening walk.

Lupine flowers are growing wild everywhere on both sides of highway 61.

Tomorrow we're moving to a geodome resort called Klarhet for our last three days. There will be many more videos and photos to come!

All for now. Trust your instincts, invest in you, live boldly, and take chances.

Poetry should move us, it should change us, it should glitch our brains, shift our moods to another frequency. Poetry should evoke feelings of melancholy, whimsy, it should remind us what it feels like to be in love, or cause us to think about something in a completely different way. I view poetry, and all art really, as a temporary and fragile bridge between our world and a more pure and refined one. This is a world we could bring into creation if enough of us believed in it. This book is ephemera, destined to end up forgotten, lingering on some dusty shelf or tucked away in a dark attic. Yet the words, they will live on in memory. I hope these words become a part of you, bubble up into your memory when you least expect them to and make you feel a little more alive.

Most of us have experienced a moment of perfect peace at least once in our lives. In these moments we lose ourselves and feel connected to everything. I call these mindful moments. Words can’t describe how complete they make us feel.

These moments are usually fragile, evaporating in seconds. What if there was a way to train your mind to experience more of them? It’s deceptively easy and requires nothing more than a subtle shift in mindset. My new book, Mindful Moments, will teach you to be much more content despite the chaos and imperfect circumstances continuing to unfold around you. Upgrade your life experience today for only $15.99 on Amazon.com.

I hear you about the connectivity! My wife and I were just in the NW tip of the lower peninsula and cell coverage was virtually non existent. It's definitely some beautiful scenery up there. My mom fell in love with the lupines when she went to Nova Scotia. The air quality has been horrible!

How did the camping trip go? Cellular is very spotty up here. One second it's great, the next there's no service. I never knew there were so many lupines in this area, they're literally growing like weeds. Oh, I bet the air quality is really bad up there. It's clear here and has been such a welcomed break from breathing that smoky air. It was like smoking a pack of cigarettes a day there for a while.

The camping trip was a bust actually. More on that later this week. The good news is we still made it to that Polish place I was telling you about. I plan on posting about that tomorrow.

It was fantastic. Just wrote a post about it. Yeah, we had a water line break in our trailer, so we had to come home way earlier than we planned.

I was already surprised you hadn't posted!!! There is nothing better than spending a few days close to nature and with family. I loved the images and videos, especially the image of the Lupine flowers and the video of the moon. Over here the moon is already beautiful and bright, too bad I can't capture its splendor with my phone. It is also unbearably hot, but nearby is the sea that sometimes brings a breeze. I hope you keep sharing photos and videos with us. Hugs and take care.

Yes, I was traveling again. It feels weird to miss that many days of posting. I think tonight is the full moon. It was so bright last night we couldn’t see the stars. It’s nice and cool up here by Lake Superior but really hot back home in St. Paul. Thank you Nancy! I hope you have a wonderful week!

Sorry about the connection. But I am glad you guys got to escape the heat to a much colder environment. And you had fun hiking in a conducive weather too. Love the Lupine flowers and it's cool you crossed path with a deer. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you! If there’s cellular service I can use my phone as a hotspot at least. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. 😊

Wow! What a fabulous place to stay! That lake is lovely, and to be 30 feet away? Dreamy. I'm glad you could get a break from the smoke in such a fabulous place. I love to sleep in places that sound like that.

Thank you! It’s indescribably gorgeous up here. I always wonder why we don’t make it up here more often. If it wasn’t for the winters (they’re even worse than the Twin Cities) I’d move here in a heartbeat. There’s no better sleep aid than the sound of the lake. Hope you’re well!

Thank you Eliana! It’s so nice to be up here in the wilderness. The place we moved to today has chickens and goats on the property. I’ll be posting about that today or tomorrow. I hope you have a great week!

It's always difficult to get decent and stable network, somewhere as this. It's almost impossible, but the serenity of the place mostly made up for the WiFi inadequacy. It's a beautiful place and taking that deer shot, seems the animal is on motion, or did you zoom in?

I totally agree, the lack of connectivity just adds to the charm. The deer was moving and I was also zooming in. I barely captured the photo before it ran off.

That explains the fuzziness in the shot, but it came out really well, seeing that the deer was on the run.

You guys look so happy in the photos and that's enough to let anyone know that you're having a swell time regardless. Bumping into a deer randomly should be among top ten must experience events. The moon's reflection on the water is nothing short of ethreal though. Where is gooseberry falls?

My wife, son, and I decided to escape the hot, Canadian wildfire smoke-laden Twin Cities for the much cooler North Shore of Lake Superior a few days ago to celebrate the holiday.

A few days ago I read that the smoke of the wildfire reached Europe (Spain and France). Hopefully the firefighters soon will be able to extinguish the wildfire.

It’s so bad. I don’t ever remember a wildfire that has raged this long, it’s been several months.

Oh the scenery is fabulous, especially the lupines! The falls aren't bad either lol. Enjoy your holiday with your family! The geodome sounds interesting and I hope we get to see it.

They’re everywhere up here! I’ve never been here this time of the year, apparently, because this is the first time I’ve seen them. Thank you Tamara! I’ll definitely be posting more (if my connection allows). Take care!

I'm sorry to read about the connection but at least you got to spend some precious time in nature closer to your loved ones which can't be compared with too many other activities as beautiful as this one :)

Thank you! Yes, I’m not at all upset about the poor connectivity, it’s forced me to relax and enjoy the nature even more.

What a beautiful way to commemorate Independence Day, spending pleasant moments with your loved ones.
What a good location of the cabin, a few meters from the shore of the lake, it is an unbeatable location
I didn't know there were lupines in that area, what beautiful shots you have achieved

Very natural and beautiful place. It has been so hot here lately as well. I wish I would go to some cooler place. Fortunately, it seems it will rain in the weekend.

Have good days mate!

It sounds like you had a great time on your getaway to the North Shore! The footage of the shoreline is beautiful, and I can imagine how refreshing the cool breeze from the lake must be.

I'm also glad you had the chance to hike at Gooseberry Falls, I love how the waterfalls are surrounded by lush forests and towering cliffs.

I'm sorry to hear that you won't be able to see the super moon, but I'm sure the reflection off the water at night will be just as stunning.

There is same thing here in Pakistan, earlier the problem of net was coming in the same way and the net was running very slowly, now it has happened one day, it has become absolutely correct. It's more fun to go with friends. A few years ago, when I visited such areas, the network was almost non-existent. Glad to see you are enjoying your trip.

I'm glad you have a stable internet connection now. I wonder if Starlink is available in Pakistan? If I was somewhere more remote I would look into it. This is even available for RVs and boats now. Thank you!

Currently the best and most popular network in Pakistan is that of PTCL. Good thanks for sharing this great detail with us.
