Yes, the mystical wooden bird figure and then the ugly parking lot :D
I like those kinds of contrasting.

Parking in Vancouver can be a mystical experience too. :D

The easiest way to get to the airport is via Skytrain. It's a large and spacious train that takes you to the terminals. Once you arrive, you pass through the ticket gates, and turn left. Then you will see a tunnel walkway that leads into the airport. It is usually full of people coming to and from the airport. You will find this bird carving just as you're about to enter the doors that lead into the airport, where the view opens up a bit, and you can see the parking lot.

On the way back from my trip, I remembered I wanted to take a picture of the owl carving just as I stepped out of the doors. I quickly reached into my pockets and fished out my phone. Usually, I like to get up close and intimate with my subjects, so I get to know them really well from every possible angle. One of the best angles is to take a picture showing the tunnel, which can create some nice perspective lines. Unfortunately, I had three limitations:

  1. Crowd behind. There was a crowd behind me, all eager to get to the train, which had just pulled into the station. There was little room to stand around getting acquainted with our mystical friend.

  2. Crowd in front. Passengers had just disembarked the train. So they were approaching from up ahead. I don't really like taking pictures of people up close out of politeness. So, I decided against it.

  3. Long trip. After a five-hour plane trip across the country, I was beat. So, I knew I only had one shot in me.

As I exited the doors, I pulled out my Pixel 7 while keeping my eye on the bird. I thought about all the possible framing moves I could make, given the aforementioned constraints, which also included a heavy backpack with all my old and new gear.

A plane took off and could be seen in the air over the parking space, but I wasn't ready yet. That would've been brilliant and driven the point home, but I couldn't well just stand around and wait for another plane to land or take off.

It was a warm day. Hot. The sun was shining and beginning its descent on the horizon.

The crowds came and went.

I slowed.

Stopped.

Spread my legs and bent them slightly at the knees.

Click!

The shot was made.

So this is how it came to be, Senorita. I hope you enjoyed viewing it as much as I did shooting it.

I feel invited to come and visit you. I am pretty sure you gave me the correct directions. ;)
Man, that was quite a situation to get this picture taken. I can feel for you. Not easy to stay cool while the crowds are busy and you don't want to mess up the shot. So, having had this situation you did a good job on capturing the owl. I now much more appreciate it, Señor :)

P.S. Parking indeed can be mystical
