entry smash 393

so my wife and i were cleaning house after we noticed that dust had been collecting everywhere. especially on the things that were lying open on a shelf in the bedroom. it was so bad that when we started sneezing and wheezing we decided to get one of those plastic storage boxes and keep the things in it. now i'm not too keen on plastic containers but we need to breathe freely so off we went to the shop

in the parking lot outside the shop i noticed the shadow of my wife carrying the translucent white recycled plastic box and asked her to stop so i could get a shot. then i noticed the dimensions of the shadow were totally misleading

so i asked her to turn the box a little. the second shot was better but still not right so she gave me the box

i held the box in the way that made the shadow the same shape as the box and she took the shot. so this is the shot i am entering in the contest

Isn’t this picture mysterious? For a while now I was confused. I know your shadow is standing right there but the other cant be a shadow 😂 it looks so real. I thought a shadow was meant to be black or just the color of a shadow but somehow you brought an inanimate object to life with its shadows even when humans don’t come alive in shadows.
All thanks to your wife for taking those pictures and im glad you could be such a still muse for the moment to give our community such a beautiful piece, I hope you win the contest.
Sending votes love and hugs!

i like to play with shadows🙂it brings out the kid in me and i am happy you took interest in my post. my shadow in the last photo and my wife's shadow in the first two are black because no light passes through either or us. on the other hand the walls and bottom of the white plastic box are so thin that some light passes through them. the chemistry and physics of the translucent plastic filters out most of the colors inherent in sunlight and only allows the brownish yellow to pass through. in order to make the box strong and stiff the rim and corners are much thicker than the walls and bottom so light does not pass through them. that's why the shadow of the rim and corners is much more black, similar to our shadows.

then there is the matter of the shape of the box vs the shadow. twisting and turning the box makes shadows that seem impossible given the fixed dimensions of the box but it is merely a matter of physics and angles, even for an opaque object. the fact that the plastic box is translucent gives these shadows a delightful three dimensional effect. playing around with shadows like this can be quite fun and satisfying i hope you try it. if you do please post your images in the contest. best wishes

at first glance shadows may seem quite simple but good artists and architects go to great lengths to understand their complexity
