entry SMASH 347: travelling with my shadow

over time i have noticed more and more that i become a different person in different environments. this is particularly evident when i am travelling. it is so conspicuous that even my shadow transforms itself radically and assumes an utterly unrecognizable form . here are a couple of examples from our recent trip to Warsaw and Budapest

that is clearly my shoe and i happen to be wearing the same pair of pants now as i am writing this post. that is definitely my leg and therefore this must be my shadow. in no way do i recognize myself in its image but shadows don't lie, the only logical conclusion is that i am a totally different being here than what i am back home.

it's a little creepy yet at the same time quite liberating and profound. there are sides to myself that i have never experienced before that are now revealing themselves here. that's really what travelling is all about isn't it.

my wife took those first two shots in Warsaw without saying a word about the weird shadows but i took some selfies in Budapest that exposed another being altogether. nothing at all like the two in Warsaw.

while i could laugh all this off and send some facetious postcards with the text GREETINGS FROM BUDAPEST , in reality i am not at all comfortable seeing this unexpected new side of myself- it's like i am trapped inside this monstrous heartless structure

on the other hand, it must be better to finally let them out so i can face them for what they are rather than to unknowingly keep them hidden away without any clue of what damage their darkness could be doing inside of me.
