a short stroll in the cold fog

it was a foggy day so i went out in the garden to view the harbor to get an idea just how thick it was.

not terribly bad, or pea soup as they say but fine for some hopefully interesting shots

across the street the short path to Mølleberget is one i have often photographed at the start of a walk in town. there is something intriguing about the fence and rock and the inability to see up and around the corner that i hope arouses curiosity about what comes next. this shot at the start of my walk sets the mood for what's to come, and i can almost feel the chill.

from Mølleberget, the Mill Hill there's a good view of the coastline westward and out through the sound to the open sea but not in fog like this

Dampskipsbrygga where before there were good roads and people owned cars there was a steamship into the nearby city of Larvik or in the other direction to Helgeroa. today there's a restaurant and it's the dock where the few remaining commercial fishermen deliver their catch. beyond that is Fredriksvern Verft, the old naval base that is now a park

turning to view inland the hill is not much higher than the rooftops of the local houses, all of which have tiled roofs and are painted white as is the tradition in such seaside towns. seeing these rooftops it feels slightly warmer

down the hill and past Dampshipsbrygga is Sukkerstranda, the tiny 'sugar beach' with fine white sand and a nice bench where one can sit and enjoy a view into the nothingness and contemplate the depths of existence.

having refreshed my mind at the cost of chilling my body i turned back towards home, taking the street route to greet the trolls who inevitably hang out here

though it is not written in law, red paint is typically reserved for outhouses, barns and sheds, also presumably people who have less respect for either themselves or their cultural history. i get that not everybody wants to live in a white house like everybody else but why choose the only color specifically associated with barns and outhouses. now the yellow house is an altogether different story, that is a special mustard yellow used for more than two centuries by many of the residences, barracks and wharves of Fredriksvern Verft. so while it is certainly a common and local patriotic color specific to this town, just not so much this part of town. it's a long story. anyway the main attraction is the line-up of trolls waiting for nightfall

back on my street looking towards the center of town, i'd invite you in for a nice hot cup of coffee but i'll probably have to make it myself.

I really enjoyed your foggy photo tour of the area, especially the hill without knowing what was coming, well done!
