Mitologías modernas: Ouka Leele & Co [Esp-Eng]
https://play.3speak.tv/embed?v=enraizar/c12ycnqq

Today I’m presenting an exhibition that’s bound to be a hit with the public: Modern Myths: Ouka Leele & Co. The title is a bit contrived, to say the least. It’s true that many of the works on display reference Greek mythology… though I also think this allusion to the world of classical Greece is an attempt to transform a lackluster exhibition into something transcendent.
The day I visited the gallery where these “modern myths” were on display—in the middle of August, when Madrid was practically deserted—I immediately encountered something my reclusive spirit dislikes intensely: a huge crowd.
It will be even worse in September with the return of those who went on vacation. Many of them will almost certainly visit the small Alcalá 31 gallery to see the work on display.
The collection on display certainly has its appeal. The reference to the Movida Madrileña—that phenomenon which never actually existed for the (then) young people of the neighborhood—is a draw that has undoubtedly captured, and will continue to capture, the attention of thousands of Madrileños and people from other places.

De fondo suena Ever fallen in love de The Buzzcocks a gran volumen.

The Alcalá 31 gallery, located near Puerta del Sol, is the venue for this exhibition. It is a small gallery consisting of a long central hall and two side rooms. It is a space that transforms with each new installation.
On this occasion, the space was spectacularly decorated in an ’80s style. The glow of the neon lights—so characteristic of those Madrid nights—and the venue’s color scheme, somewhere between purple and pink, quickly transported me back to those nights in Malasaña in the late ’80s and early ’90s… for some reason, I was reminded of a certain early morning at La Vía Lactea, a trendy music and drinks spot at the time.
My memory—or perhaps my longing for the past—yearned for a bar counter, a mirrored cabinet overflowing with various liquors, and one of those tall, plush stools where I could sit down with my third-liter bottle of Mahou.
Without much effort, I pictured myself sipping that cold beer, surrounded by the steamy, sticky mist formed by the hundreds or thousands of puffs of smoke doomed to never leave the bar. In the background, Ever Fallen in Love by The Buzzcocks is blaring.

Once the initial wave of nostalgia for times gone by had passed, I arrived at the geographical heart of the exhibition. A circular, dimly lit space, with several ’80s-era televisions lining its perimeter. On one of those screens, Paloma Chamorro was once again interviewing the brilliant Ouka Leele:
I don’t like color photography. “I take black-and-white photos and then color them in…”—I seem to recall the photographer explaining.
The presence of these televisions isn’t merely aesthetic.
On public television, shows like La Edad de Oro and La Bola de Cristal were very important platforms for the “movida.”
Although, as a regular at nightclubs, I also remember how the bands of the moment or classics like The Who or The Doors would appear on their TV screens. Sometimes, they offered images never seen before. Those were the days of the brand-new VHS technology and the first music videos by pop and rock bands.
All this introduction is necessary because of the lesson in humility that this exhibition offers.
What came to be known as the “Movida Madrileña” was nothing more than the belated arrival of punk and the British New Wave in Spain—under Franco, everything arrived late. It was a youthful explosion centered on music, though not limited to it.
This outpouring of creativity transcended the boundaries of music. In the art world, this rebellion against the customs and traditions of our parents’ generation—against the bleak Spain of the Franco era—spread to comics, photography, painting, and literature…

The exhibition interested me—don’t doubt it—because it was, in some way, part of my life. Those were years of great excitement, as immense as the enormous disappointment that followed.
Of all the artists featured in this group exhibition, I’m including only three in this publication—the three who still truly interest me.
To these three, one could add El Hortelano, the artist who appears in the video.
I find El Hortelano’s work less appealing, although I still consider him a very interesting artist. I didn’t follow his career as closely as I did Ceesepe’s, perhaps because much of his work didn’t feel quite as fresh. It reminds me—or reminded me—too much of Japanese science fiction illustrations from that era or American underground comics.
This is a very personal opinion, but much of what I saw on the walls of this art exhibition has aged poorly.
What’s more, without the narrative of “la movida”—that is, if we don’t view it through the lens of myth—I’d go so far as to say that much of what’s on display isn’t particularly interesting… It’s just an opinion, nothing more.
Equally debatable is the call for modesty I sense as I wander through the labyrinth of hallways housing the exhibits. Every generation believes it is living through humanity’s greatest moments; we’re all a bit narcissistic, and the belief that we’re part of something special is, without a doubt, a powerful remedy for reigniting even the most subdued egos.

Returning to the myth, the exhibition is yet another expression of that invention or construct known as the “Movida Madrileña.”
An idyllic space-time, a shadowless Arcadia. A narrative as falsely immaculate as it is tedious—boring enough to put you to sleep.
In reality, the “Movida” was part of a very simple mechanism. It functioned like the valve on a pressure cooker, releasing just enough pressure to keep everything from exploding.
Then reality set in… the gray Spain of Bernarda Alba returned. Boring, obedient… and now, on top of that, with talk show hosts.
I have no doubt that my generation didn’t experience the exceptional moments I thought we were living through, and now, looking back at the artistic creations of that era, there were undoubtedly some interesting things to be found amid all that creative exploration.
I’m one of those who believe that, with so many positive things to talk about, expressing negative opinions about something or someone doesn’t make much sense. Besides, everything is open to interpretation, so I’ll just share what I truly enjoyed about this journey through Alcalá 31 and the “movida.”

To me, this artist’s work seems the furthest removed from our idea of the “movida” in the entire exhibition. Although he appears to be a serene artist, his work possesses that touch of provocation characteristic of the era.
Some paintings remind me of de Chirico and that strange world he left behind… And I also saw hints of Dada… at least a little bit.
Perhaps this more “classical,” more “calm” view of reality is what has allowed Sigefredo Martín Beige’s work to hold up quite well to this day. Other artists who were more “daring” aesthetically, in my opinion, have aged rather poorly.

Ceesepe
My first encounter with Ceesepe’s work was through his role as a comic book illustrator for the magazine Madriz. It was a publication put out by the Madrid City Council back in the distant 1980s. I remember very well how, every time a new issue of Madriz fell into my hands, the first thing I looked for were his cartoons.
Probably, if Ceesepe hadn’t been among the artists selected for this group exhibition, I wouldn’t have been very interested in seeing it.
My reunion with Ceesepe’s work did not disappoint me. Without a doubt, seeing the poster for Almodóvar’s film La ley del deseo brought back fond memories. Not because of the film—which I have no desire to watch again right now—but because of that era.
This brings us to perception—how I perceive the work and my dialogue with it.
To what extent can I separate the positive memories associated with the work from the work itself? I’ve tried my very best to walk through the gallery without the “contamination” of the past, though I’m not sure if that’s even possible.
My opinion: Ceesepe still strikes me as a very, very interesting artist in 2026. I’ll leave you with his work—or a reflection of it—and I just hope you can enjoy it as much as I have.
Speaking with a friend a few days ago—someone who knew him—we both agreed: he is a very underrated artist, and his work is greatly underappreciated.

Ouka Leele
Ouka Leele is a very unique photographer who studied fine arts and was deeply interested in painting—a quality that comes through very clearly in her work. What I find intriguing about her work is how her photographs don’t hide their sources of inspiration (Surrealism, Warhol), yet they remain so personal. The artist herself offers a clue to this:
Without realizing it, I discovered a language—one that was very personal to me—that helped me create a poetic style and a language through which I could express myself beautifully.
One of my images involves more hours of painting than of photography. When I do this, I manage to bring something subjective to a photograph; I add emotion to something that, in principle, consists of capturing reality.
The world Ouka Leele has created is very, very personal, full of fantasy and surprises, somewhere between dreamlike and cinematic. When I look at some of her color photographs, I see in 1980s Madrid the freshness and poetry of Georges-Jean Méliès ...

I loved the image of the girl with the deep gaze; I don't know much about art, but the paintings and the video's presentation are great. It's a very beautiful place.

No sé...
Buenas tardes. Un abrazo y como siempre gracias.
Wow, so many images! It was a great tour, sir. I've seen so many images thanks to you. Truly beautiful, and the interpretation that each person gives it is a lot to discuss. Art is very subjective; I liked the beginning of the video, excellent.

We appreciate your work and your publication has been hand selected by the geography curation team on behalf of the Amazing Nature AN Community. Keep up the good work!
