Greetings to the Art Talk community. This is my first presentation in this beautiful community dedicated to art, I hope this publication is to your liking.
Thanks for the welcome.
PhotoESPAÑA is one of the most important photography festivals held every year around the world. This year's official program (2024) includes an exhibition by photographer Boris Savelev entitled "Viewfinder-Una forma de mirar".
The exhibition venue, "La Serrería Belga", is located in the heart of Madrid (Spain), near the Atocha Station and the Prado Museum. Today, "La Serrería" is an industrial space converted into an excellent cultural venue.

This exhibition is the most extensive retrospective of Boris Savelev to date, covering his entire career as a photographer from his beginnings in the seventies, with his Iskra 6x6 cameras and his Leica and his black and white photographs, to digital photography, through the Kodachrome and the Orwochrom.
Savelev, who was born in 1947 in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, affirms that it was in 1976 when he really became a photographer, when he joined the Foto Club Novator, a group of photographers outside the Official Union of Photographers and distanced from the official Soviet photography.
I went to this exhibition accompanied by my friend @soho1958 and, certainly, it was very fortunate. Boris Savelev's work generated many questions for me about his creation, especially the large work. In such a way that @soho1958 was clearing my doubts about the color, shadows, light, texture and grain of many of the works exhibited.

It seems that the type of film used in many of them, Kodachrome and Orwochrom, is part of the secret of the color. The size of the camera aperture, wide, and the time the photographs were taken, at sunrise or sunset, are other ingredients that explain the aesthetics of many of the photographs on display.

Those doubts that my friend was not able to resolve were resolved by the exhibition catalog. The final result of many of Savelev's creations, so close to an oil painting in texture and relief, is due to a pigment transfer process that involves the superimposition of gelatin and pigment, in layers, on a gesso background and a final wax finish.

I was surprised that photography could also have a tempo. The fact Savelev´s photography a has a rhythm, the exhibition is slow, each work is a call to stop and reflect. When we look out of those windows created by Savelev, we see reality without the veil of self-complacency of a fabricated public opinion. On the other side is reality, at least one reality, that of degraded urban landscapes. No matter the place, whether Moscow, St. Petersburg, New York, London or Madrid, the scenery is populated by spectres, shadows or solitary reflections.

Sharing a visit to an exhibition also allows us to share our own associations, because each vision has a personal context, a biography.

My companion and I agreed on the similarity of the dirty aesthetic to Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy (1972) and Gilbert Taylor's photography.
@soho1958 also showed his photographer's eye by associating the red color stamped on Savelev's canvases with the work of Fred Herzog.

My gaze, fuller of melancholy in the Hippocratic sense, from exile observed together with a child trapped in an instant, a fine thread that linked the reality behind each window with the solitary landscapes of Van Gogh. Another world in which the specters also walk alone and in silence.
In my mind reverberated, among ants and scorpions, Autumn Landscape (1885), The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in the Snow (1885), Flower Beds in Holland (1883) ...
.... And then there are those faces... the passage of time... from that young girl with a cheerful face, perhaps showing the hope of the Perestroika years, to the later faces... sculpted by the weight of centuries....

Las exposiciones de PhotoESPAÑA no defraudan y tus fotografías nos permiten recorrer esta de primera mano. Me ha gustado mucho la forma de mirar de este artista, esos juegos con las líneas, las perspectivas, las sombras y reflejos… pero también la capacidad de capturar momentos especiales como esa mujer del pañuelo atravesándola puerta. Ah, y ese montón de carretes Kodak ha sido como un retroceso en el tiempo. Gracias por esta oportunidad de conocer la obra de Boris Vaselev.

The exhibition was a big surprise for me, there are photographs that produce the same impression as to see a great oil painting, it gave me the impression of being in one of the rooms of the Prado Museum. The reels are from another exhibition ... but here they were very good.
It is the first time that I dare to publish something about art ... and Vaselev has pushed me to publish ....

La exposición ha sido una gran sorpresa para mi, hay fotografías que producen la misma impresión que ver un gran cuadro al óleo, me dio la sensación de estar en una de las salas del Museo del Prado. Los carretes son de otra exposición... pero aquí quedaban muy bien.
Es la primera vez que me atrevo a publicar algo sobre arte... y Vaselev me ha empujado a publicar....

It is a poem in action, the colors, the dog's pose and the framing of this photograph are very impressive. Anyone who knows a little about photography will tell you the same thing.
Mysterious and interesting, even terrifying, a capture of despair, I find it fascinating how he was able to achieve this photo.
The shadows and lights in this one make me think of a cybernetic and post-nuclear future, it speaks to me of abandonment, of apathy, but also of resistance, of maintaining values, and even of arrogance. A great photo.
Thank you very much for sharing this exhibition. But I think you could have made it longer, with about 100 more photos, it would have been good. Why so few photos? 😘
This guy is incredible, I don't understand photography, but I do recognize what many of those photographs make me feel.

Oh, and I would like to point out that I really liked how he have chosen to present the exhibition through this traffic sign, I think it captures the essence of their exhibition a lot.

Desde mi perspectiva (que no soy un experto en fotografía, pero si que he aprendido algo, gracias a mi querido @miguelmederico a quien etiqueto para que se haga presente en esta publicación y te de su valiosa e interesante opinión sobre toda la exposición, que se te va a gustar que intervenga un especialista en la materia) este signo muestra varios enfoques diferentes, empezando por el de la mujer a la izquierda que esta divinamente opacado como con un filtro de blur, marcando una contraposición entre lo difuminado y la imagen real que se ve en la parte inferior con el bolso o la bolsa de color rojo que lleva. Captar esa transición en la foto es magnifica, es sublime.
Por otro lado tenemos al anciano en otro plano diferente, que encaja de manera magnifica en la foto (Miguel sabe de lo que estoy hablando y seguramente Carlos tu amigo también) y hace que resalten los edificios del fondo, sin que se pierda el centro en la señal de transito que es el foco de atención. Un muy buen trabajo fotográfico sin lugar a dudas mi amigo.

Capturing that transition in the photo is magnificent, it is sublime.
On the other hand, we have the old man in a different plane, which fits magnificently into the photo (Miguel knows what I'm talking about and surely Carlos, your friend, too) and makes the buildings in the background stand out, without losing the center in the traffic sign that is the focus of attention. A very good photographic work without a doubt my friend.

Más allá que nos gusten más o nos gusten menos las fotografías, lo llamativo es que las fórmulas aurea surgieron a partir de la pintura. Vincularon la matemática a lo subjetivo para aproximarse al gusto universal de la gente y dieron con el punto, o mejor dicho, con los puntos donde nuestra atención presta atención. Casi siempre funcionan, hasta con estas escenas caóticas que medio toman orden con esos puntos de interés.
No es común y eso la hace más llamativa, pero no todos saben apreciar ese arte más confuso, menos nostálgico y lleno de más subjetividad detrás de quien trata de descifrar el mensaje principal en la escena.

Es un post muy genial. Te agradecemos muchísimo todas las fotos para que podamos admirar la exposición a lo grande. Me encantó que también incluyeras el video. Este es un ejemplo de perseverancia, amor y entrega a lo que realmente nos llena y nos hace felices. Un gran fotógrafo, sin dudas.

Hola @vezo, pues me he atrevido, después de pensarlo mucho y con muchas dudas, a entrar en este campo de las reseñas... y ya estoy preparando alguna más 😁. En este caso, algo, o todo en mí, me decía que tenía que compartir lo que había visto. He estado tres veces en la exposición, estas fotos son de mi tercera estancia en el mundo de este genio... y estoy muy contento con la publicación. Y muy contento de mostrar la obra de Savelev en Hive.

Muy buenas Jose. Para mí también la exposición fue un descubrimiento, no conocía al fotógrafo. El enclave tampoco y la verdad es que se agradece que usen estos sitios para lugares culturales antes que para centros comerciales y tiendas de moda.
Centrado en la exposición me gustó bastante, la verdad, y estoy de acuerdo contigo en cuanto al ambiente un tanto deprimente, de soledad, tristeza. La luz del amanecer, calles vacías, edificios vetustos y descuidados, bares vacíos, rostros que yo interpreto como desesperanzados… La foto del chico con la camiseta blanca, de espaldas, ni el chico se atreve a mirar lo que tiene delante, un edificio bastante gris.
Respecto al color en las fotos de Boris Sevelev, llevo dándole vueltas varios días. Usa Kodackhrome 64, la misma película que usan fotógrafos en color (Fred Herzog, William Eggleston, Joel Sternfeld…) pero aquí los colores parecen contagiarse de la atmósfera de tristeza, miseria, y desesperanza que debía de vivir cada día. La película es la misma en los fotógrafos antes citados pero la atmósfera y la psicología de cada uno de ellos consubtancializan a su objeto fotógrafo.
En cuanto puedas echa un vistazo a la foto de William Eggleston, “The Red Ceiling” a ver que te parece el uso del rojo ahí. Y a las fotos de Joel Sternfeld.

Afortunadamente bien. Adaptándonos al clima y el entorno. No esperaba el choque térmico y ya paso la ola de viento polar, con lo cual disfrutamos de unos agradables 14 o 15 grados con sol. Ya se fueron el viento y la neblina. Ojalá siga así.

Yo había comentado que no podía ver las fotos en su momento, y si, era por el nodo que me estaba dando falla.
Wow, si que son varias fotos donde toma enfoque los colores, para aquel tiempo le llevaría tiempo.
Me atraparon 2, la primera es esta por el ambiente en el que se hizo la toma.
Y la otra pues, es por echar broma es esta, ya que parece que el señor que anda al fondo sabe que detrás de la cabina de teléfono está alguien con una cámara preparando la foto. Aquí no se ve, pero en los otros dos cuadros que están al lado de este, 😂
🤣, me ha encantado el comentario sobre el señor que mira, si hay una foto en la que ve bien grande que parece que hace eso. Me alegro de que puedas ver las fotos, y que se haya arreglado el problema de internet.
