🪝 Hooked on Turtles 🐢 (Not For Weak Stomachs)

How are you? If you seen my last fishing post, then you've been expecting this. This is the most interesting catch that day. I decided to put it over here on my main profile, because it isn't just about the fishing.

As you may have guessed from the title, I totally caught a turtle! But, not just any turtle. This turtle was either angry at humans or knew I could help.

It really makes you wonder what level of intelligence they really have. Just read on and you'll see what I'm talking about.

@lunamoon first noticed it about a quarter mile from where I had it latch itself onto my line and take a ride to my yak.

I remember her saying something about "it looks like it has a stick on its head" and I commented about maybe it was a freak of nature and grew antlers to ward off prey. I've seen Stranger Things. Really, I have. The show too 😁

It kept popping up though, the same turtle, at almost every bend. Like it was following us. As I rounded a corner and pulled into one of the bays (I call it Old Bridge Bay because there used to be a bridge back in the corner), I saw it again and we locked eyes.

I casted about twenty yards to the left of where it was and then got (what I thought) was a nice bite! Then it just went limp, adhering itself to gravity and I was under the impression I was either reeling in a good size pile of weeds or stick or something.

Nope!

It was that fukn turtle!

But something was off and upon further inspection, I discovered what made it look like it had something protruding from the top of its head, because, well, it did.

A good pair of hemostats is an absolute must for any serious fisherman. You never know when you're going to have to try and retrieve a hook from a deep swallow on a big gulp from a fish. This time, they performed surgery on a willing, however hesitant, pond slider.

After the procedure was complete, they all wanted to wish the poor fella well. Now, what do you think? Do you think it followed me because it was hungry and saw me catching fish? Was it angry at humans and wanted to attack me? Or, do you apply to my daughter's theory that it was cognizant and intelligent enough to seek medical attention from creatures that it knew could help? Whatever you choose to believe, do choose to REMEMBER TO BE YOU! I always am, even as a reptile surgeon.

Great job performing turtle surgery, that little needed it for sure. I hope it survives in the long run, that was some major trauma for that little turtle!

You reminded me of Sarah Al-Ma'idah

Good good, chief! 👍

I guess yiur daughter theory is right, the turtle might intelegent enough to know how to find help for the hook, just like so many animal rescue which is initiated by the animal itself.

You guys are doing a wonderful job.
