Tanegashima, the Japanese matchlock

Today we are going to talk about firearms and the impact they had on the history of Japan.
First of all, it should be noted that due to its proximity to China, gunpowder was introduced very early in Japan. Archaeological evidence attests to the presence of hand cannons as early as the 13th century. These cannons were simple metal tubes, without triggers or sight, and were quite dangerous for people on both sides of the gun!

It was not until the 16th century, and more precisely in 1543, that the first arquebuses arrived on Japanese land. These guns are called Tanegashima in Japanese, from the name of the island where they appeared. In fact, the story goes that Portuguese adventurers were sent adrift by a storm and found themselves near the Japanese island of Tanegashima. The lord of the island bought 2 guns from the Portuguese, probably in exchange for food and the repair of their boat. He then instructed his blacksmiths to reverse engineer the weapon so it could be produced on the island. This was eventually done with further help from Portuguese blacksmiths, and the first Tanegashima was created. This event would change the destiny of Japan forever.

Indeed, it should be known that at that time (the Sengoku period 1467-1603), Japan was a very fragmented territory and each small province had its independence. The emperor had no practical influence on the local lords who applied their laws. However, the Sengoku period is mostly known for the war of the unification of Japan. We have talked about it several times in this blog, but it is a pivotal moment in the history of Japan.

It is during this period that Tanegashima guns had the biggest impact on the history of Japan. The last phase of the unification war began with Oda Nobunaga, who was the first to use them on a large scale. Indeed, until then, these weapons were used by elite soldiers, the foot samurais, in small numbers, a few dozen guns per battle. In the middle of the 16th century, Nobunaga ordered the production of several hundreds of Tanegashima to form a specialized army corps. Nobunaga's riflemen had the advantage of range over the opposing archers and also the power to penetrate any armor or shield. Nobunaga was victorious over very powerful (but very traditional) opponents. Then, it became clear that a decent army could not do without these weapons nor ignore the devastation they could cause. Nobunaga was defeated, but his guns and riflemen remained.
Thus, by the end of the 16th century, it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of rifles had been produced!

History continues, but this weapon has already played its most important role. The pictures in this post show enthusiasts performing a demonstration in period costume as part of the festival in Sakai City, which was a major production center of Tanegashima.

Aujourd'hui, nous allons parler d'armes à feu et de l'impact qu'elles ont eu sur l'histoire du Japon.
Tout d'abord, il faut noter que de par sa proximité avec la Chine, la poudre à canon a été introduite très tôt au Japon. Des fouilles archéologiques attestent de la présence de canon à main dès le 13e siècle. Ces canons sont de simples tubes métalliques, sans gâchette ni viseur et étaient assez dangereux pour les personnes des deux côtés du canon !

Il faudra attendre le 16e siècle et plus précisément l'année 1543 pour voir les premières arquebuses arriver sur le sol japonais. Ces fusils sont appelés des Tanegashima en japonais du nom de l'île sur laquelle elles sont apparues. En effet, l'histoire raconte que des aventuriers portugais se sont fait malmener par une tempête et se retrouvent au matin près de l'île japonaise de Tanegashima. Le seigneur de l'île a acheté 2 fusils aux Portugais, sûrement en échange de vivres et de la remise en état de leur bateau. Il a ensuite ordonné à ses forgerons de faire l'ingénierie inverse de l'arme pour pouvoir en produire sur l'île. Cela a fini par se faire avec l'aide de forgerons portugais et les premiers Tanegashima ont été créés. Cet événement allait changer le destin du Japon à tout jamais.

En effet, il faut savoir qu'à cette époque (la période Sengoku 1467-1603), le Japon est un territoire très fragmenté et chaque petite province a son indépendance. L'empereur n'a dans la pratique pas beaucoup d'influence sur les seigneurs locaux qui appliquent leurs lois. Cependant, la période Sengoku est surtout connue pour la guerre de l'unification du Japon. Nous en avons parlé à plusieurs reprises dans ce blog, mais c'est un moment charnière de l'histoire du Japon.

C'est donc au cours de cette période les Tanegashima ont eu le plus grand impact sur l'histoire du Japon. La dernière phase de la guerre de l'unification commence avec Oda Nobunaga, et ce dernier a été le premier à les utiliser à grande échelle. En effet, jusque-là, ces armes étaient utilisées par une certaine élite, les samouraïs à pied, en petit nombre, quelques dizaines de fusils par bataille. Dès le milieu du 16e siècle, Nobunaga a ordonné la production de plusieurs centaines de Tanegashima pour former un corps d'armée spécialisé. Les fusiliers de Nobunaga avaient l'avantage de la portée sur les archers adverses et également la puissance pour traverser n'importe quelle armure ou bouclier. Après plusieurs victoires de Nobunaga sur des ennemis très puissants (mais très traditionnels), il était devenu évident qu'une armée digne de ce nom ne pouvait plus se passer de ces armes ni ignorer les ravages qu'elles pouvaient provoquer. Nobunaga a été défait, mais ses fusils et fusiliers sont restés.
C'est ainsi que dès la fin du 16e siècle, on estime que des centaines de milliers du fusil avaient été produits !

L'histoire continue, mais cette arme a déjà joué son rôle le plus important. Les photos présentées dans ce post montrent des amateurs effectuant une démonstration en costume d'époque dans le cadre du festival de la ville de Sakai, qui a été un centre majeur de production de Tanegashima.
