A Walk Around the Ruins of Errwood Hall, Goyt Valley

We had another walk around the ruins of Errwood Hall in the Goyt Valley. The hall once belonged to the Grimshawes, a well off merchanting family between 1768 -1851. In 1832, Samuel Grimshawe bought the Errwood Estate along with its 2,000 acres and built the hall on the land around 1840. On the estate, there were also 13 tenant farming families. Source

It was a cold, misty morning as we made our way up the footpath to the ruins and through the 2 stone pillars.

After the last family member of the Grimshawes died in 1930, Stockport Corporation bought the estate to build Fernilee Reservoir. In 1934, the hall, the farms, cottages, and the school were all demolished. Today, there's just the ruins left.

There's not a lot left of the hall, just the base, a few walls and the stone steps.

Further up, there was a small graveyard where the Grimshawe family were laid to rest with some of the people who worked for them.

In the summer, there's lots of rhododendron bushes which are lovely to see in full bloom. Returning in the autumn/winter gives you a different perspective, but it's still an interesting place to visit.

The oddest part was that the reservoir was actually built across the road submerging the Goyt Bridge and some of the farmland. There wasn't any reason to demolish the hall at the top of the hill, but the corporation insisted that the area was polluted, so everything had to go. Rumour has it, they couldn't afford to maintain it. Sad.

Wow! Quite an old place to walk around! Luckily, no ghosts on this area. But it looks very strange to me! Nice autumn atmosphere.
