A Visit to the Picturesque Village of Castleton, Derbyshire, UK

avatar

We called in at Castleton in Derbyshire, UK today, which is a quaint little village with lots of lovely old stone cottages. It is quite a popular tourist attraction with hikers and visitors from afar. I did ask one of the locals, if she ever got fed up of visitors traipsing around her village all the time? She said she loved it as everyone was so nice. I couldn’t argue with that.

Peakshole Water (stream) flows through the village from the Peak Cavern nearby, which is affectionately known as the Devil’s Arse!

Castleton is famous for its semi-precious stone the 'Blue John'.
It is mined in the village with all four caverns open to the public. I haven't been down the caverns since I was a child. Lots of the shops in the village sell Blue John jewellery.

The ruins of Peveril Castle sits at the top of the hill. We didn't fancy walking up the hill but it still looked very impressive in the mist. It is now owned by the English Heritage.

At Christmas, the whole village lights up with festive lights and there's Christmas trees outside nearly every shop, carol singers and a santa's grotto for the kids. It's even better with a light dusting of snow on the ground, to add to the atmosphere. It really is a beautiful place to visit. It is like stepping back in time.

A dream location, just the other day I saw a vlog of some Romanian vloggers who visited this place.
