I hope no one was injured, but I given your explanation of how the train operates, how could the driver not see? I am sorry for the damage to the train-is it still operational?
The driver, well, his car might have gotten what he deserved, but I do hope he/she is okay?
So sad that people aren't more aware of their surroundings!

The driver did not see the train because he did not look :))) If the train comes from the left or right side and you only look at the road ahead... everyone is fine including the train. :))
Seems odd to me the driver wouldn't look. If it's an 'unmarked' meaning no railroad crossing lights, then looking would be logical!
Maybe they need to take their driver's test over again, lol!

I think he kind of took his test again, having a near death experience like this should open one's eyes for any future encounter with rail crossings. :))
