The Ecological ecological Benefits of Callicarpa giraldii

Hey dear Hive community, first of all I hope that you are doing relatively well and that you had a day that was full of positive experiences! In this article, I would like to discuss the ecological benefits of a plant and hope you can expand your knowledge.

Here are some pictures of the beautyberry which is also known under the scientific names Callicarpa giraldii and until late in the year many purple flowers which can be seen when most of the other flowers have already blossomed. The beautyberry has its origin in Asia and it is a perennial and easy-care plant that is definitely a great enrichment for gardens and delights the eye! It is considered extremely adaptable and is relatively flexible when it comes to the location and it copes well with sunny or semi-shaded or damp soils. In summer, pink flowers form which attract numerous insects such as bumblebees, bees, hoverflies or other insects and the berries are important for birds and offer nutritional value. Especially in winter, when there is little food for birds, the beautyberry has proven to be extremely useful, but the berries are slightly poisonous for humans and should therefore not be planted near children.

The toxic effect can be traced back to the contained active ingredients terpenoids or callicarpenal but due to the toxicity, it is still used in Chinese medicine and the active ingredient terpenoid can also help against mosquitoes and the plant can help to minimize insect attacks. For medical purposes, mainly the extracted essential oils are of interest, but as always, it should be noted that in case of illness, you should always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the correct medicine and application in order to avoid complications and this should be taken into account, especially with slightly toxic plants! Due to the height, which can reach several meters, it is also well suited as a hedge and provide an ornate garden and the special color definitely has a large part to contribute to it. It is a great ornamental plant that also plays an important role for insects and birds and even if the berries are poisonous for humans, I would recommend it to anyone who values ecological gardens.

God is wonderful the fruit of the beauty berry looks much alike like the other edible berries we have in the market if one is just walking round a garden and found it one might be tempted to pick one and eat not knowing that not all berries can be eaten. It should not be planted where children can easily access like you said.

Good that you mentioned it again! :) Some berries just look delicious despite the toxicity and that’s a good example of this. Interesting that it doesn’t pose any problems for birds as often with poisonous berries :)

A property that many berries share :) It is definitely a great enrichment for ecological gardens and creates a very own and artistic flair as I think.

It is really a great color that also has some positive qualities and is often associated with mysticism.
