This plant is also known as cornflower or scientifically Centaurea cyanus and according to some assumptions, the botanical name from Greek mythology could be derived from the centaur Chiron who once used the plant to perform healing miracles. Originally the plant comes from the Mediterranean region and the common name is closely linked to the cultivation of grain and was grown together with grain in fields and was increasingly spread by the export of corn and the cultivation in the landscape ensured a wide spread of the plant and this also had the cause that it was difficult to separate the seeds from each other. In the later course of the industrial revolution, there were some changes in agriculture which meant that the plant became rarer and possibilities were found to be able to separate this plant from the grain better and this was also the reason that the cornflower was threatened with extinction in some places and nowadays the biodiversity is especially promoted by organic cultivation in which no methods are used to artificially process the grain. From an ecological point of view, the plant is extremely popular with insects and offers from June until late in the year, various species an important source of food and you can find some insects on the flowers that are becoming increasingly rare or even threatened with extinction and cultivation can be very worthwhile and contribute to the preservation of biodiversity. It is one of the plants that can be classified as particularly valuable from an ecological point of view and offers a rich range of pollen and nectar for wild bees, butterflies, caterpillars or hoverflies and although the plant is now more widespread again, it is still considered endangered. The plant is very easy to care for and is able to spread by itself via seeds and is generally considered relatively adaptable when it comes to the location and is recommended for anyone looking for something ecologically valuable which is also a great medicinal plant, but I would like to mention here that in case of illness, you should always ask your doctor or pharmacist of trust for the right medicine and side effects!
