Recently when I went on a trip, I was lucky to be able to photograph some old remains of a castle from the Middle Ages and I would like to go into the general architecture of the Middle Ages. Before this time, wooden buildings were mostly used and over time more and more stone was used and each area had its very own architectural style and the Middle Ages were particularly influenced by the two architectural styles Romanesque and Gothic. The castles looked very magnificent and typical distinguishing signs for the Romanesque is the typical round arch and the Romanesque began already in the 5th century and reached in the 13th century its most important time and then went more and more into Gothic. Typical for the buildings were strong walls who were built for defense and usually had small windows and the focus was on stability and functionality and the paid more attention to the benefits. Most of the castles were built in the 12th century and the bridges connected to the entrance were made of stone and replaced wood and improved the stability. A ditch was of great importance and there was a forecourt in the outer ring in which supply buildings and armories were often placed and the inner circle was additionally surrounded by buildings of protection and inside of the castle lived the lord of the castle and there were storage rooms, safe houses or halls and of course the structure varies and next to the wall typical towers were built on which mostly troops were stationed.
