What Makes a Photographer, Really? ESP/ENG

I’m a photographer by trade.
I love photography.
It was my dream to become a photographer.
But even so—
I find it hard to define myself as one.
Something happens to me with photography—
I hesitate to say “I’m a photographer.”
And it’s not just a personal thing—
I also find myself questioning others who call themselves photographers.
What is it, really, that makes someone a photographer?

Soy fotógrafo de oficio.
Me gusta la fotografía.
Era mi sueño ser fotógrafo.
Pero me cuesta definirme como fotógrafo.
Algo me pasa a mí en la fotografía
que me cuesta definirme como fotógrafo,
y no es algo que me pase con la percepción de mí únicamente,
me cuesta no juzgar a la persona que se denomina como fotógrafo.
Porque, ¿qué es lo que define a un fotógrafo?

A photographer isn’t their camera.
A photographer isn’t even just their photos.
A photographer is their vision.
And here’s where my conflict lives:
my vision doesn’t come only from photography.
It comes from my relationship with the body,
with others,
with my interest in illustration, in philosophy—
photography, for me, is a space where all these things converge.

Un fotógrafo no es su cámara,
no es sus fotos,
sino su visión.
Y ahí es donde se encuentra mi conflicto.
Porque mi visión y punto de vista
no parte exclusivamente de la fotografía,
sino de mi trabajo corporal,
mi relación con los otros,
mi interés por la ilustración, la filosofía, etc.

To me, photography is an art
that includes many other arts,
many sensitivities.
And many people who define themselves as photographers
do so because they’ve mastered their gear—
but not necessarily because they’ve embraced
the deeper opportunity to create images with meaning
beyond what’s simply in the frame.

Por lo cual, para mí,
la fotografía es un arte que involucra muchos artes y sensibilidades,
y muchos fotógrafos que se definen como fotógrafos
en muchas ocasiones lo hacen partiendo de que dominan una cámara
pero no desde la oportunidad que tienen de crear imágenes
con contenido más allá de lo contenido en la fotografía literal.

I really like these photos—
even if they don’t fully reflect that vision I speak of.
Still, the act of empathizing
with the person I’m photographing—
that, for me, helps me feel like a photographer.
Even if I don’t feel tied
to the traditional idea of the photography profession.

Estas fotografías me gustan mucho
y no reflejan mucho de esa visión que tengo,
pero empatizar con la persona con la que fotografío
es una práctica que, para mí,
me ayuda a definirme como fotógrafo,
a pesar de que no me siento un fotógrafo
puramente ligado al oficio de la fotografía.
