The Perspective of Parenthood and Financial Freedom ESP/ENG

Recently, I had a conversation with a friend who told me that he is surprised by people who have children because he doesn't feel ready and is afraid to even imagine it. On the other hand, I told him that one never truly feels ready, and even if one does, having children is a challenge far more difficult than one can imagine beforehand. However, it also allows you to experience such unique things that, for me, it’s impossible to live them without having children—and if you do, they don’t happen at the same pace.

Hace poco tuve una conversación con un amigo donde él me decía que le sorprende la gente que tiene hijos porque él no se siente preparado y le da miedo imaginárselo. Y yo, por otro lado, le decía que realmente uno nunca se siente preparado, y aun así, aunque te sientas preparado, tener hijos es un reto más difícil de lo que te puedes imaginar antes de tenerlos. Pero también te permite vivir cosas tan únicas que, para mí, es imposible que las vivas sin tener hijos, y si las vives, no suceden a la misma velocidad.

After talking for a while about our initial points, he told me that he truly doesn’t want to have children because he is not interested in the experiences that come with parenthood. Instead, he aspires to financial freedom, something he actively works toward and invests his resources in. Having children, for him, makes that goal much more difficult to achieve. This made me deeply appreciate having my daughters because, although financial freedom is something we all aspire to, having children brings experiences that are so vast and profound that financial freedom could never fill that space (at least from my perspective).

Luego de conversar un rato acerca de nuestros puntos iniciales, él me comentó que realmente no quiere tener hijos porque no le interesan esas cosas que puede encontrar al tener hijos. En contraparte, la libertad financiera es algo que aspira, algo por lo que sí lucha y donde enfoca sus recursos. Tener hijos hace muy difícil esta idea que tiene de libertad financiera, lo cual me hace valorar mucho haber tenido a mis hijas. Porque, a pesar de que la libertad financiera es algo que todos aspiramos, tener hijos tiene un conjunto de vivencias dentro que son tan amplias y profundas que la libertad financiera jamás podrá llenar (o por lo menos según mi perspectiva).

Whenever I photograph an expecting couple, I feel a deep sense of tenderness and warmth toward them as they are about to experience this for the first time. Parenthood is a unique journey for everyone, but without a doubt, it brings a sense of fulfillment in life, making every moment spent with and for them incredibly valuable.

Siempre que fotografío una pareja de futuros padres, me da mucha ternura y buenos sentimientos por las personas que lo van a vivir por primera vez. Tener hijos es algo que es muy diferente para todos siempre, pero sin duda, es algo que te hace sentir muy pleno con la vida y encontrar mucho valor en cada instante que pasas con y para ellos.
